The British Population and Eligibility Severe Disability No Disability
The British Population and Eligibility Potential Paralympians Arms & shoulders (AS) Trunk and Arms (TA) Legs, Trunk and arms (LTA) Ineligible Severe Disability No Disability
AS/TA Rowers • More visible disability (noticeable walking impairment/wheelchair) • Unable to use a sliding seat (TA) • Unable to use trunk to propel a boat due to flexibility or control (AS)
LTA Rowers Arthritic condition Visual impairment Clubfoot/ Fused ankle Congenital defect of the hand/3 finger amputation
Identifying an LTA Rower... …Especially those already in your club! • Medical questionnaires of rowers when they join • Limitations when carrying out gym/rowing related movements eg. Squatting

Do they have potential? • Ask yourself the same question? • Do they have the potential to be competitive in your squad? (LTA) • 1km Ergo Times (TA/AS – Tall, Long Arms, Athletic, Strong)

What if someone approaches you without potential? • Is everyone in your club an Olympic Rower?
What if you aren’t sure how to integrate someone/don’t have the right equipment? • Ask for advice – Me, or British Rowing • Get them started on an ergo • – BUCS Indoor events • Explore the option of loan equipment • Apply for a grant It does not have to be labour intensive or expensive!
Final Thoughts • Hopefully you know who to contact! – ME! • Hopefully you are more open to someone with a disability joining your club • Hopefully we can change this statistic: 173,379 people with a disability in British Universities Less than 1% involved in sport
