2. Stormwater What is Stormwater? Runoff from rain and snowmelt flows over urban surfaces and carries pollutants to the nearest stream.

3. Stormwater Why is Stormwater a problem? These pollutants can impair aquatic ecosystems and impact drinking water sources.

9. All Municipal Employees Must… • Be aware! • Know what an Illegal Discharge is. • Know who to report to. • Know how to prevent Stormwater Pollution! “Keep it Clean ‘Cause we’re all downstream”

10. Illegal Discharge An illegal discharge is defined as any discharge to the storm sewer system that is not composed entirely of stormwater.

11. Illegal Discharges • Concrete washout • Saw cut slurry • Leaking vehicles - spills • Leaking dumpsters • Restaurant waste/grease • Erosion from construction sites • Landscaping materials on streets (Dirt, Mulch) • (Anything but rainwater)

12. Illegal Discharges • Boiler or cooling tower blow down to street or parking lot • Illicit connections (floor drains that don’t go to sanitary) • Hot tub draining to street • Wastewater from pressure washing or hosing • Animal waste (Poop!) • (Anything but rainwater)

Allowed Discharges • Footing drains & foundation drains • Water from crawl space or basement pumps (groundwater only) • Uncontaminated, pumped groundwater • Air conditioning condensation (not from coil cleaning) • Landscape irrigation run-off (not wasteful) • Individual residential car washing • Charity or non profit car washes – less than 2 days

14. Permitted Discharges • These discharges require a state discharge permit: • Discharges from potable water sources (hydrants, water lines – must be de-chlorinated) • De-chlorinated swimming pool water • Discharges from HVAC or HTE coil cleaning • Rinse water from washing bleachers or grandstands

18. Best Management Practices (BMPs) • Contain all leaks. (Inside and outside!) • Do all maintenance work inside. • Clean up spills! • Know where your spills kits are and what materials you can safely cleanup

19. Parks Maintenance BMPs • Follow your Integrated Pest Management Plan. • Avoid spraying pesticides or fertilizer within 50’ of surface water or drains. • Designate “no spray zones” and/or buffer areas around water features.

20. Vehicle & Equipment Washing • Wash Vehicles and mowers ONLY in designated wash bays (NOT in parking lot)! • Brush off excess grass from mowers before washing. (Mowers and tractors may be washed off over grassy areas ONLY if you absolutely can’t get to the wash bay. NO SOAP!)

21. Fueling Practices • Do Not Top Off ! • Post signage • Have spill clean-up kits at pumps. USE THEM! • Don’t walk away! • Use funnels or spouts to prevent spills.

22. Trash Containers • Keep dumpsters or other containers closed - at all times! • Dumpsters should not be uncovered, over-filled, or leaking! • Clean up spills – immediately!

23. Drains, Drains, Everywhere! • Look for drains! • Where do they go? (Creek?) • Maintain a Map of your facility • Keep chemicals and waste from entering them.
