Passive Voice. Module 5. Use. Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. The subject doesn’t matter. Who did it doesn’t matter. Just the action.. The Agent (doer of the verb) . Someone stole my purse. (active) My purse was stolen. (passive)

  2. Use • Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. • The subject doesn’t matter. Who did it doesn’t matter. Just the action.. The Agent (doer of the verb)

  3. Someone stole my purse. (active) • My purse was stolen. (passive) • In the second sentence, we can see that the subject doesn’t matter. Just, that the purse was stolen.

  4. Formula Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs) Quick PPT

  5. If subject is important… • We use by The Chinese invented paper money. Paper money was invented by the Chinese.

  6. Practice (Passive Voice –Simple Present) • He opens the door. -  • We set the table. -  • She pays a lot of money. -  • I draw a picture. -  • They wear blue shoes. -  • They don't help you. -  • He doesn't open the book. -  • You do not write the letter. - 

  7. He opens the door. -  The door is opened by him • We set the table. -  The table is set by us. • She pays a lot of money. -  A lot of money is paid by her. • I draw a picture. -  The picture is drawn by her. • They wear blue shoes. -  The blue shoes are worn by them. • They don't help you. -  You aren’t helped by them. • He doesn't open the book. -  The book isn’t opened by him. • You do not write the letter. -  The letter is not written by you.

  8. Past Tense… • He opens the door. -  • We set the table. -  • She pays a lot of money. -  • I draw a picture. -  • They wear blue shoes. -  • They don't help you. -  • He doesn't open the book. -  • You do not write the letter. -

Past • He opened the door. -  The door was opened by him • We set the table. -  The table was set by us. • She paid a lot of money. -  A lot of money was paid by her. • I drew a picture. -  The picture was drawn by her. • They wore blue shoes. -  The blue shoes were worn by her. • They didn't help you. -  You weren’t helped by them. • He didn’t open the book. -  The book wasn’t opened by him. • You did not write the letter. -  The letter was not written by you.

  12. Verbs with two objects • Some verbs have two objects, indirect and direct. • They gave Jane first prize. Subject + verb + indirect object+ direct object
