Academic Support Computer Reps meeting Winter term April 5th 2012
Agenda • Connect Exchange accounts switching to Nexus authentication on the evening of Tuesday April 10th (Trevor Bain) • Migrating user data (N: drives) from bread to fileu (Tim Farrell) • Migration of academic support department computers to the Nexus domain (Phil Knipe & Will Lewis) • Office 2010 upgrade (Phil Knipe) • Moving network printers to private network (Phil Knipe) • Desktop Rollover Program update (Phil Knipe)
Migrating computers and users to Nexus • Why are we doing this? • Report of the Information Technology Task Force - May 2009 • Recommendation 2: The University should consolidate, to the maximum extent possible, Active Directory forests and domains, with a preference to move to NEXUS, if feasible. • Big Picture change
Stage 1: Move N drives • Move all department N drives to Nexus file server overnight • Drive mapping is changing • Before: ADS N drive = \\jam.uwaterloo.ca\dept$ • After: Nexus N drive = \\fileu.uwaterloo.ca\users$\
Stage 2: Departmental Prep • Supply list of users and computers using provided Excel template • Identify Primary computers used by each person • Identify secondary and shared use machines • Send spreadsheet to IST liaison with preferred time to schedule migration • Computer Reps and Vanguard users will be department Nexus testers – moving first • Notify staff about migration schedule
Stage 3: Migrate workstations and users to Nexus • Pre-move tasks performed by IST • DNS changes • Pre-stage computers in Nexus domain • Check ADS & Nexus User groups • Backup data in ADS user profile • Migrate machines to Nexus domain with user consent • Post-move tasks performed by IST liaisons • Work with every user at first login to Nexus • Goal: To setup the Nexus user profile to mirror the ADS user profile as closely as possible
