What’s leadership? • "Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." • "It’s influencing people to get things done to a standard and quality above their norm and doing it willingly."
Traits of an effective leader • Integrity • Openness • Courage • Enthusiasm • Fair-minded • Good communication skills • Straightforwardness • Creativity • Ability to influence the behaviour of others. • Willingness to accept consequences of decisions and actions.
Leadership styles The most common leadership styles are: Authoritarian (autocratic) 2. Participative (democratic) 3. The Laissez-Faire (delegative) 4. Charismatic leadership 5. Transformational leadership 6. Transactional leadership 7. Servant leadership
Leadership & Communication Leadership Communication Skills Communication skills can be broken down into three areas: • Speaking Skills: Leaders need to clearly communicate their messages and both the sender and the receiver must have a clear understanding of the information that results from the communication. • Listening Skills: Effective listening involves not only hearing, but also comprehending and understanding the message. • Non-Verbal Behaviors: This means sending and receiving messages in a variety of ways without the use of verbal codes (words).
