Surveys • Helmet Surveys 2 x per year • Hospital Survey • Currently 1 x per year, but increase in 2006 due to database officer. • Plans of MOH to set up trauma registry at Friendship Hospital with WHO support.
Public Awareness Helmet wearing campaigns • In May the Lao Government decided to enforce the helmet law. This has been delayed until the end of 2005, as the fine had to be agreed on and the traffic police is trained on the issue. • HIB decided to put the core focus on helmet wearing for 2006. • Banners, radio spots and DJ announcements, information stands, leaflets, social marketing of helmets, 1 TV spot.
Public Awareness Social marketing of helmets • 1,250 helmets imported from Thailand (3 different types, incl. 2 children helmets). • Helmets will be sold for 50 % of the price in shops. • Sold to poorer people via CBR, village information stands and other projects. Traffic Police helmets • 300 Traffic Police helmets ordered for VTE Traffic Police and National TP
Public Awareness Village Information Stands • First trials successful • 2 more village will follow • Screen should be included, to provide diverse information. That Luang / ITECC stands • RS information stands at That Luang (4 days) and ITECC (10 days). • Together with AGL • Use of screen drew many people
Education School Visit Program • Only some public schools visited in the beginning of the year. • Re-direction of the school visits > more classroom-based to make it more interactive. RS Primary School Curriculum • Work will commence in 2006. RS Presentations • Novotel, US Embassy, MSLW, Vientiane College

Training / Workshops RS Awareness training • 15 Animators trained to work for HIB on different RS activities. RS Media Workshop • Will be held in December (21.12.?) • Focus on road user behaviour
Rural RS • Start in 2006 (extension to Savannakhet) • Initial hospital survey • Selection of 10 target villages • Possible interventions: Nighttime visibility, first aid training for police, staff at health posts, safe crossings near schools…
Further Objectives • Strengthening of ties with Traffic Police • Strengthening of media ties, particularly TV • Improvement of exhibition materials • Development of new material • Advocacy: Pedestrian behaviour, nighttime visibility, helmets for children.
