  3. SCHEDULE IN DETAIL ARRIVAL \ ATTENDANCE • Supervised on lower playground starting at 8:00 • School begins at 8:20 • Once bell rings, children line up behind room 3 • Children need to wait for Mrs. Haydu

  4. Interactive Writing/Calendar • Mrs. Haydu and the children “share the pen.” • We write letters/words and sentences together to create meaningful stories and messages • We learn about writing conventions, parts of speech (noun, verbs), plurals…. • In Calendar we learn months of the year, weather, days in school, graphing

  5. Math/Math Stations • Everyday Math • Children will learn: • Subtraction • Addition • Fact Families • Greater Than/Less Than • Time • Measurement • Fractions • Use a combination of written practice and hands on manipulatives. • Pattern Blocks • Linker Cubes • Plastic Clocks • Dice • Coins • Dominoes • Math Stations: Children will have a chance to explore with the math manipulatives, practice or review skills. I use math station time to pull small groups who may need extra support or may need to be challenged.

  6. Word Work • Phonics: Study of sounds and their relationships. How to blend sounds together to make/read words. • Sight Words: These are words that children need to memorize because they do not follow the sound/spelling rule (the, said) • After whole group lesson, children will work independently on their own sight word list and spelling pattern (sound) Mrs. Haydu will meet with small groups.

  7. Shared Reading • Mrs. Haydu and the students read a book together as a class • Mrs. Haydu models reading strategies: comprehension, fluency, accuracy, vocabulary • Children are actively engaged and participating throughout the lesson • The book is repeated throughout the week so children can become familiar with its text aiding in fluency and accuracy

  8. Reader’s Workshop • Children are taught reading habits, how to solve unknown words, comprehension, fluency (reader’s theatre), and story elements. • Children will read fiction, nonfiction and poems to learn/practice these skills. • Mrs. Haydu models a reading skill then students go and try it while reading independently from their book boxes • Children also practice these skills by reading with a partner. • Mrs. Haydu meets with individuals and small groups while children are reading independently

Daily 5 • Daily 5 • Read to Self • Read to a Friend • Listen to Reading • Work on Writing • Word Work • Mrs. Haydu meets with small groups while children are independently working on a Daily 5 activity. Small Groups are working on a specific spelling pattern (sound) and reading books appropriate to their reading level.

  10. WRITER’S WORKSHOP • Children will learn about how letters, words and sentences are constructed and put together to make a story. I use the Writer’s Workshop Model by Lucy Calkins • Mrs. Haydu will model appropriate writing skills • I believe all children are storytellers and have many wonderful stories to tell. • I encourage children to write about anything they want so that they enjoy the writing process. • I meet with individuals and small groups to differentiate instruction • First Graders are taught how to write Narrative Autobiographical, Narrative Fiction, Expository Text, Poetry/Songs and Persuasive (Opinion) • We will have 2-3 publishing parties during the year where the children invite parents/family members to share their stories.

Special Activities • P.E. • Teacher Mr. Barnette • Thursdays and Fridays 10:25-10:55 • Students learn the importance of exercise and they will learn about their bodies and how they move. • “Grades” are based on large motor (large muscle) abilities, attitude and participation. • Music • Mr. Just • Mondays 11:10-11:40 • Children will learn music concepts through movement and participation • Library • Fridays 9:30-9:55 • Children will check out a book and leave it at school • Computer/i-Pads • TBA • Everyday Math games, word work apps, listening to reading…

  14. Report Cards/Assessments • Report card is skill/standard based. No grades • Assessments are given regularly and instruction is individually based. Some assessments I use: • Running Records • BPST (phonics test) • Irregular Sight Word recognition test • Tests ( math facts, writing prompts) • Checklists • Notes

  15. Field Trips/Buddy Class • Extreme Gym (Pending Approval) • 10/23, 1/8, 5/27 • In-House Field Trip with Explorit K-2 • 11/30 Buddy Class 6th graders!

Discipline • Rules • Be Safe • Be Respectful • Be Responsible • Consequences • 1st time – verbal warning • 2nd time – take a break • 3rd time – loss of free time/recess • 4th time – call/note home • 5th time – meet with teacher, parents, Mrs. Alfonso • If child demonstrates appropriate behavior then consequences may be waived. • Rewards • The joy of learning • A happy call home/Pawsome Ticket

Birthdays • Please contact me in advance (about 1 week prior) to set up a day for the celebration). • The celebration will take place at 2:00 • If you would like to bring something in to share with the class then please put your items in a bag.You may bring in non food items (pencils, stickers, tattoos….) You may also donate a game, book, puzzle to the class in your child’s name. If you would like to bring food you may. Please not peanuts. • We have 25 children in our class
