Facts at a Glance: • Charlottesville’s population is about 45,049 charlottesville.areaconnect.com/statistics • UVA’s total enrollment: 19,197 UVA website • Charlottesville has a total land area of 10 square miles. Land Area of Virginia Counties and Cities • UVA has the capacity to house only 35% of its students. Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission CS 200 Spring 2003
So What Does This Mean? “Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.” ~Aaron Levenstein CS 200 Spring 2003
Implications of Statistics: • There is an incredibly high demand among students for housing in the UVA/Charlottesville area!!! • This level of demand creates excessive competition for information, which makes acquirement of housing a matter of… CS 200 Spring 2003
CHANCE!!! CS 200 Spring 2003
Our Goal in Building a website: • To combine information available from the UVA Housing Division as well as data from realtors Off-Grounds to create a more centralized, accessible source for students! CS 200 Spring 2003
Our Website’s Provisions: • A large database containing information from UVA Housing and registered Off-Grounds realtors, including amenities, prices, and application dates. • A search engine which allows users to search based on location, price, amenities, etc. • A message board allowing users to post housing-related needs such as subletting and roommates. The Adventure Nexus! Patrick Rooney Will Brand Steven Marchette Ramsey Arnaoot
What • Site to help people with somewhat “alternative” interests network (although could easily be used by those with more common interests) • Allows for users to post planned events so that others of similar interests may join the poster CS 200 Spring 2003
Why • Help spread interest in lesser known interests and give a forum for the participants in those activities (again, site can be used universally, it is just easier to call a group of friends for a football game) • Doing things alone is (obviously!) much less fun than with a group which enjoys the same interests as you CS 200 Spring 2003
How • Users post the event with the date, details, etc. • Other users can then view upcoming events and RSVP if they plan on attending • Also: when the Poster selects a category (or categories) for the event, an email is automatically generated to other users who have selected that category as one of their interests.
