Being seen and known by God is... • An open invitation • Song of songs 2:14 “My dove in the clefts of the rock,in the hiding places on the mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice;for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.”
Being seen and known by God is... • Always a choice • Psalm 139:1 “You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.” • Psalm 139:23 “Search me, O God, and know my heart...” • Psalm 138:6 “Though the Lord is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.” • My paraphrase: “Although God is so different from us, his love for us bridges that gap. God sees us and loves us, coming close when we invite him to know us, but fully respecting our freedom when we don’t.”
Letting God see and know me is... • Always met with love • Sometimes a struggle
A process of MUTUAL self-revelation “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.” (Psalm 42:7)
A process of MUTUAL self-revelation • “Growth in relationship with God occurs through mutual self-revelation: God reveals divine presence to us more fully, and we share ourselves more generously. God’s objective self-communication through creation, Scripture, life circumstances, and relationships becomes subjective and alive in our experience. Further, God’s felt involvement causes interior reactions in us. Spontaneous reactions toward and away from God also take place. ...Each of these elements – God’s self-revelation and our interior reactions and response – usually occur simultaneously. [...] God becomes real for us as we affectively respond to God’s self-communication.” (Maureen Conroy, The Discerning Heart)
Some things help... • The “bigger story” can open up our own story • Giving it time and going with whatever comes up • Conscious dialogue with God about whatever comes up • A regular practice - or an irregular one! (Trust and courage grow when used; vulnerability leads to connection)
