January Jan 14- The new governor of Alabama, George Wallace , gave the Segregation Forever inaugural address. Jan. 28th- School desegregation in South Carolina finally achieved when African-American student Harvey B. Gantt enrolls at Clemson.
February • Feb. 28- President JFK asked congress to broaden laws to protect African Americans
March • March18- the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the poor must have lawyers
April April 12th- Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. arrested and jailed in Birmingham, Alabama during a desegregation drive
May • Birmingham, Alabama police turn dogs & fire hoses on Civil Rights protesters
June • U.S. President John F. Kennedy says that segregation is "morally wrong" and it is "time to act..." • June 11th- Alabama Governor George Wallace blocks entrance of state university to African-American students. He later backs down in the face of National Guard troops called in by President Kennedy • June 12th- Civil Rights leader Medgar Evers assassinated in Mississippi
July • July 1- Aug. 2- Senate Commerce Committee held days of hearings • July 29- 34 protesters were arrested and charged with trespass
August • Aug. 28- Massive march of 250,000 blacks, one of them being Rosa Parks, on Washington to pressure quick action on civil rights movement • James Meredith becomes the first African-American graduate of the University of Mississippi • Aug. 28th- The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his "I Have a Dream" speech before a crowd of over 200,000 gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
September • Sept. 15- 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama killed 4 young girls and injured 20 people
October • Oct. 7- Freedom Day in Selma, Alabama SNCC workers accompany black would-be voters to the court house to help them register • Freedom vote- in Mississippi several civil rights organizations, council of federated organizations, launched freedom vote mock election to give black citizens practice for casting a ballot
November • Nov 22- President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas • Nov 24- Millions of people watched as night club owner Jack Ruby murdered JFK’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald • Nov 25-JFK was buried in Arlington National Cemetery
December • Members of many civil rights organizations did a Holiday March carrying letters to political leaders to urge anti-segregation legislation
