Welcome and Congratulations! • You are the top 20% academically of all Brunswick Juniors and Seniors at BHS and the MCCC. • For the past 2 to 3 years you have used your academic gifts and talents wisely. • May your final years at BHS, the Career Center or as a PSO student be as productive and positive.

2. Brunswick High SchoolC.R. Towslee Chapter ofThe National Honor Society • A chapter of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious service and honor society for secondary level students in the country.

3. Criteria for Membership • An honor bestowed upon the student, by the faculty and staff of BHS, for demonstrating exemplary - Scholarship - Leadership - Character - Service • It is not a right accorded to the academically eligible student.

4. General Obligations • To live up to, and maintain, the standards by which the member was selected; • To be an active chapter member by attending meetings and taking part in decision making; • To willingly participate in service projects organized by the chapter; • To complete individual self-directed service projects;

5. General Obligations • To participate in our tutoring program; • To actively support the chapter’s fund-raising activities; • To help with the Induction Ceremony; and • To ensure the continuation of the strong Honor Society traditions at our school.

6. Advisor Beliefs • Requirements / Responsibilities can be met flexibly based on your current school and community activities and interests– Sports, Extra Curricular Activities, Clubs, PSO, MCCC, Church, Scouts, etc. • We take our responsibilities seriously, and expect the same of all selected members. • Our role is that of facilitators and organizers , ideas and decisions are made by the members.

8. Tutoring We provided tutoring services to the high school and community. During their years of membership, last year’s seniors provided 4208Hours of tutoring. Most of these are educational tutoring, but they also include sports coaching, music instruction, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Safety Town, Sunday School teachers, and mentoring. 

9. Large Group Community Service Projects: Our Seniors completed 1262 hours of “Large Group” service. As a chapter we 1. Provided volunteers for Open House and Conferences 2. Produced “Magic Pictures” at the Halloween Spooktacular 3. Rang the Bell for the Salvation Army

11. Individual / Small Group Community Service Projects: In total, senior members provided over 1782 “Individual or Small Group” service hours to the school and community. Individual or small group activities included in part: child care for staff members during open house and conferences, working in the classrooms to help BHS students with multiple disabilities, hospital volunteering, hospice volunteer, March of Dimes walk, Red Cross Volunteers, blood drives, support to scout troops, Student of the Month committee, church activities, mission trips, Habitat for Humanity, library volunteers, volunteers at the local Recreation Center for youth and Senior Citizen activities, National Junior NHS , troop and veterans support, kindergarten screening and serving as Graduation Marshals.

12. Additional Achievements: We again sponsored the Winter Formal. NHS members put in nearly 1,000 hours in creating decorations, setting up, taking down, and storing all of the decorations and materials. We raised $6,000 for senior NHS scholarships and Community Service Activities.

14. ***** • During their 2 years of membership, our 69 Senior BHS NHS members provided more than 7252 hours of service to our community. (Junior records are incomplete at this time.) • These hours are above and beyond any other hours students may have done in other activities. We do not allow students to count activities twice (for more than one organization or group – except to track all hours for their final transcript.)

15. BHS NHS Expectations and Responsibilities

16. Time Expectations • If selected as a junior, member expect to commit to about 125 hours to tutoring, service projects, and other chapter activities. • If selected as a senior, member expect to commit to about 60 hours to tutoring, service projects, and other chapter activities. • These requirements have not changed in at least the last 17 years.

17. Specific Responsibilities • 25 hours of Tutoring activities each year of membership • Attendance at monthly meetings, Induction, Leadership Training and Cord Ceremony • Active participation in the Winter Dance – decorations, set up and clean up

18. Specific Responsibilities • Six hours of Large Group Projects each year • Four hours of Individual or Small Group Projects each semester of membership ( Four hours for your first year of membership, then another eight hours if you are a second year senior) • Maintenance of a cumulative 3.4 GPA • Continued demonstration of good character

19. Selection Process 1. Completion of Consideration Form indicating your intent to be considered. 2. Completion of the Signature Page. 3. Completion of Activities Page on a computer or printed in good, dark, black inkto share information about your activities with the staff, and provide verification of Community based activities. 4. Returning this information by October 11, 2011.

20. Selection Process 5. Information forms are reviewed by the Faculty and Staff who have the opportunity to evaluate each student. 6. An anonymous Faculty Council, representing each main academic department at BHS, with the input available from all responding staff members, choose those students who best exemplify the four characteristics of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

21. Selection Process 7. Students are notified by mail of their selection or non- selection over Thanksgiving weekend. 8. Induction and Leadership training take place December 16, 2011 in the PAC. 9. Advisor’s Role – Organize Information, Chair Faculty Council, Maintain Necessary Records, Notify Students. We do not vote. ** There are no quotas, no minimum or maximum number of students selected.**

22. Service • The average number of service hours for new inductees last year was 112. The year before it was 57. • The range was from 17 – 254 hours for 57out of the 61 new members. • Four new members did extraordinary service, and had volunteered more than 400 hours before they were selected!

24. Consideration Form Brunswick High SchoolC. R. Towslee Chapter of the National Honor Society On the basis of your cumulative grade point of 3.4 or better, you are academically eligible for consideration for membership in the National Honor Society. There are a few main points that need to be understood by those of you interested in such consideration and, as these are part of the NHS Constitution, the local chapter must abide by these regulations.  1.The attached form is a survey to determine interest and provide information regarding service and leadership activities. It is NOT an application for membership, as the national Constitution does not provide for that method. Membership is “an honor bestowed upon a select group of students by the faculty council on behalf of the faculty.” It is not a right accorded the academically eligible student. 2.The Constitution also stipulates that this must be a service organization. To maintain our charter we must provide both school and community service every year. You should know this IN ADVANCE. If you are not interested in this service, please do not indicate an interest in NHS, for non-participants are in danger of losing membership. 3.Any member who falls below the standards which were the basis of his/her selection will be warned and given a period of time to regain these standards. A member must maintain the standards for membership in order to retain his/her membership. These standards include all four: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. A member will be allowed only one warning period. Once a member is dismissed from membership, he or she is never again eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. 29. Leader, Editor, Officer, Captain • Not every student will find a good “fit” in these positions. Not every student is comfortable in leadership positions.

Huddle, Student Council, Big Brother/ Big Sister, Academic Challenge, Key Club, Interact, VOFT, Band, Choir, Theater, Athletics, Cheerleading, Art Club, Intramurals, Language Clubs, Devilier, Yearbook, Orchestra, SADD,Video Club, Photo Club, Young Folk, Ski Club • Not every student will find a good “fit” in these activities.

31. NHS may not be the best activity for you at BHS. • Not every student will find a good “fit” in NHS. • There may be other activities that fit your needs and yourinterests better. • NHS will not make or break a college application. • NHS membership will not make or break your high school career.

32. Please consider NHS if you: • Are willing to maintain your 3.4 cumulative GPA • Have given and are willing to continue to give service to your community • Have shown and are willing to continue to demonstrate leadership in your community • Have demonstrated and are willing to continue to demonstrate good character

NHS is a nationally recognized honor, and taken seriously at BHS. • NHS can be one part of your total high school experience. • For those who find value in its standards, it can be a valuable experience. • If you share in our beliefs, we encourage you to indicate your interest in being considered for membership.

34. What happens if I am not selected as a Junior? • If a student is not selected as a junior, they may still be selected as a senior. • In 2010, we inducted 11 new seniors, to join our 58 second year seniors. • These students may have increased their cumulative GPA to be academically eligible, or they demonstrated increased leadership, character or service. • They may also have represented themselves much better on their activity form!

Not for you? • If you are not interested, please complete the consideration sheet indicating that you are not interested, and return it as soon as possible. • Discuss the decision with your parents. While it is your decision to make, your parents probably want to know. • As advisors, we must track each eligible student. No matter what your interest is, PLEASE return the consideration sheet by October 11th!
