European Colonies in the New World • England, France, Holland, Portugal, Spain • 1750’s: Only France (Canada) & England (East Coast) are left • Frequent clashes over territory both in and out of US • France allies with Indian Tribes much more frequently
French & Indian War (1754-1763) • Fought mainly over the Ohio Valley • British suffer early setbacks • Americans take note • War goes global in Caribbean, Pacific & India • 1756: England starts to turn the tide • George Washington captures Ft. Dusquene • France sues for peace • Treaty of Paris: • GB gets Canada & East of Miss. River • FR & SP lose West Indies & Florida • SP gets FR land West of Miss. River
Big Problems • War was too expensive • Time to tax • Governing new lands is hard & expensive • Time to tax • Native Americans are pissed • GB try to stop US peeps move west: Proclamation of 1763 • American people want to expand • Resent Proclamation of 1763 • Relationship is changed forever: • Brits feel US is weaklings & backwoods • US sees Brits as pompous and beatable and need their help
British are Stupid… • End of “Salutary Neglect” • Brits leave American economy alone • W/ FR gone, no need to worry about competition • Won’t enforce Navigation Laws and others • Post-War: • Sugar Act (1764) • Currency Act (1764) – US can’t print own $$ • Quartering Act (1765) – Provide for Brit Soldiers • Stamp Act (1765) – tax all printed materials • Declaratory Act (1766) – GB’s right to tax US • Townshend Acts (1767) – Tax all goods coming into US ports & suspend New York Assembly
Boston Massacre • Massachusetts boycotts all British goods; tar & feather custom officials • British soldiers occupy Boston to keep order • March 5, 1770: 11 Bostonians killed • Americans enraged
Final Straw • Tea Tax • British East India Company has a surplus of tea • Granted monopoly over US tea sales • Lowered prices but still resented • Dec 16, 1773: Boston Tea Party • England passes Intolerable Acts
