Implementing the Dream of Democracy Through Public Service: Ask Me Why I Care! AACPM 24th Annual Conference Columbia, SC, October 16, 2012, Mary R. Hamilton, University of Nebraska Omaha Rita Paskowitz, Storyteller
Why are you participating in this Session? (POLL) • The title intrigued me • It’s a plenary—no other option • I like stories • I couldn’t sleep anyway
We’d like to know who you are (POLL) • Government employee --Federal --State --Local • Faculty member • Student • Nonprofit employee • Other
Topics for Today • Public employees are critical to making Democracy work • Stories can change the public perception of government and public employees • How to tell your story • Be ready for people to ‘Ask You Why You Care’
Breaking the Cycle • The universe is made of stories, not atoms. Muriel Rukeyser
Let’s Talk About Democracy • “Government by the People” --One big Town Meeting? --Every citizen engaged in running the country? --Elected representatives running the country? • Not realistic in a large country
Where does that leave Public Service?? • THREE Steps removed from the People!! • Both Antithetical and Complementary
Here’s Where YOU Come In YOU “Deliver Democracy on a Daily Basis” --You help citizens access their rights --You are a kind of ‘professional citizen’ or ‘representative citizen’ --You are government to most citizens
Your Role in “Delivering Democracy” • Help Citizens Access their Rights • Promote the public interest • Manage and Administer public institutions • Implement public policy • Be professional, moral, ethical, responsible, reliable
YOU ARE A STORY WAITING TO BE TOLD.
ASK ME WHY I CARE
THIS IS YOUR ELEVATOR SPEECH.
It’s not about your job description - it’s the way you touch another person’s life. It’s not about your job description - it’s about the way you touch another person’s life.
You are • the author • of your own story so: • Be specific • Be brief • Be the hero you really are
Remember: THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE IS A STORY
MARY’S ELEVATOR SPEECH
Telling Your Stories • Interviewee’s name, position and organization • What do you DO? Not your position, but what do you do to positively affect people? • Describe a situation where you had a positive effect on one person • Why do you CARE?
Collecting Public Service Stories • See GUIDANCE FOR COLLECTING PUBLIC SERVICE STORIES • Help us collect stories from public employees—especially the invisible ones!
Poll #3 Have you thought of someone YOU would like to interview or would you like to have someone interview YOU? • Yes—I’ve thought of someone • Yes—I’d like to be interviewed
In Conclusion . . . • Public employees make Democracy work • To help citizens (and even politicians) understand this, you must be able to tell your story • You must be able to tell them why you CARE!
Quote from John Kirlin Public Service is: “A central part of the grandest of human endeavors—shaping a better future for ourselves and those yet unborn”
