Monday September 9th: Evening • You meet with your guide Ella, and tour Ramaya. On the way from the airport you see several shanty towns and inhabited landfills as well as, in contrast with, downtown which is full of banks and luxury hotels. You notice a severe financial gap amongst Genalan citizens. • You make your presentation to the Genalan officials, effectively making a good impression with your plans which incorporate traditional Grenalan design with more contemporary ones. You assure the board that the project will improve the lives of the citizens of Grenala. • That evening Girish, a man you met six months ago at the office pays you a visit. It turns out he is the chair of the selection committee. He states that his advice to the minister can help in guaranteeing the contract for Pines. Knowing from a magazine article that Genalan business contacts usually expect favors, you tell Girish that in future business deals he and his family should visit the United States and perhaps look at colleges with his children.
Sunday, September 21st • Joe calls to inform you, Girish has called to notify the company that, although unofficial for now, they have accepted the contract for the new resort. • Joe also asks you why Girish is looking forward to meeting him and his wife, and why his his sons are hoping to visit the University. You hurriedly state that you need to be at your mother's house in a half hour and hang up.
Monday September 22nd • Joe calls you into his office to reprimand you about inviting Girish to visit • Joe considers it a bribe but you’re not convinced that you did anything wrong • You make an excuse saying that you had to make the call on the spot. No time to think or call Joe • Joe threatens to fire you if you allow Girish to visit.
Tuesday September 23 • You try to persuade Joe to let you pay for the visit personally • You say that this is the way they do business in Genala • Joe says, “Don’t accept this cultural relativism stuff.” • Joe feels that if he condones this, he’ll be responsible. • You tell Joe that you’ll explain it to Girish and hopes that he will understand
Friday October 17th • Consider financial side of problem. • Decide there is a way to buy out difficulties. • Few years ago, bought some stock in dot-com start-up. • $2 a share • Recently sold most of it at $64. • Almost “mad money” to you. • Will cover plane ticket for Girish and his family. • Good financial investment • If job comes through Joe will share with you as Christmas bonus. • You figure you’ll get it back • You think: How could this be thought of as a bribe? • Nothing unethical about it. • Just helping out a friend • You think: Why would you not want to tell anyone about what you are doing? • You need to know what to tell Joe and Girish
Saturday October 18th • Alex and the kids are visiting Grandma • You think about the nice time at the coast you had at this time last year • You decide to go again • Have a plate of BJ’s crab cakes • Good long walk will clear your head • You’ll be able to make decisions to make some plans • BJ’s has closed and is boarded up • You decide on Kim’s Krabcakes • Sign displays “The Koast’s Keenest Krabcakes!!!” and “The Best Widescreen Coverage on the Koast” • Crab cakes are not as good as BJ’s • Found out that bartender left on boat with woman for Barbados • Walk around, Sit and pull out notebook • Make up two stories • You tell Joe that Girish has found funds to pay for his trip • You’ll be vague but it is expected, you aren’t an expert on the ins and outs of Genalan business ad politics. • You’ll hint that there is something suspicious about Girish’s funds • Leave Joe to draw conclusions • May decide that Girish has extorted kickbacks from contractors, but can hardly object since it isn’t within Pines’ control. • Second Story • You’ll explain Joe’s scruples to Girish. • Adding that you have found a way to fix it. • Girish won’t be interested in how the trip is being paid for, just that it is. • Pleased with you’re ingenuity • Retrace steps • Take a shower in the C-Breeze • Stroll to Kim’s • Watch Yankees win for the 4th time
