  2. Objective • Integrating information from several texts, the student will be able to write or speak about the importance of history and the voyages and motives of Christopher Columbus.

  3. Bell Ringer • Please take your seat and complete the following bell ringer. After writing your thoughts on the provided sheet, discuss your opinion with another student. You may be asked to share. • “History, after all, is the memory of a nation.”- President John F. Kennedy

  4. Anticipatory Set • Why should young people study history? • Did you know that on Columbus’s fourth voyage he was attacked? • Who was the enemy? Worms. Yes, you read that right, the enemy was worms.

  5. Teacher Input/ Guided Practice Procedures • Read and discuss biography “Christopher Columbus” background passage. Using the book the First Americans, the teacher will present the reading text of why we study history. The students will read and discuss page 9 and 10 from text. The teacher and students will read and discuss chapter 16, “A New Land is Discovered.” Students will participate in a history through literature read –along entitled, Journal Log, “I, Christopher Columbus. 1492-1493,” Chapter 18 - Worms

  7. Independent Practice • Students will successfully read and complete “The Log of Christopher Columbus.”

  8. Assessment • The Students and teacher will discuss the following questions: • What’s the point of studying history? • Columbus was captain of what ship? • Columbus started his voyage with a crew of ? • Christopher Columbus was in search of and . • On Christopher Columbus’s fourth voyage his ships were attacked by . • Analyze Columbus’s motives for undertaking the voyage. • Identify areas of potential conflict and cooperation between Columbus and his crew and between the Europeans and the Tainos.

  9. Closure Importance of integrating several different sources of information to enhance the story Why study history? A new land is discovered The importance of journals Power over the Moon vs. Worms.

  10. Early Finishers • It must become culture in our schools for early finishers to automatically take out a book and READ!
