  2. Communism • Soviet Union taking over China and European countries as well as some countries in Africa. • Atomic bomb testing • America scared that the communisis would spread to U.S.

Joseph McCarthy • Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin • Started the anti-communist crusade in 1950 • Accused many people of being spies and having loyalties to the communist party. • Cause of the term “McCarthyism” which is used to describe the ruthless, paranoid accusationsand conviction of unpatriotic behavior.

  4. Government Involvement • In 1940, the U.S. congress passed the Alien Registration Act. It made it illegal to encourage , support, or influence overthrowing the government. • It also forced alien residents over the age of 14 to register themselves and write a statement completed with their political beliefs and job status. • HUAC – the House of Un-American Activities Committee investigated un-american behavior and communist activity.

  5. BLACKLIST • Employees were let go and blacklisted when under suspicion for involvement in communist activities. • HUAC interviewed Hollywood workers who leaked 19 names involved in communist activities. • “Hollywood Ten” • People such Stella Adler, Lester Cole, Albert Maltz, Adrian Scott, Samuel Ornitz, Dalton Trumbo, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Lawson and Alvah Bessie were blacklisted, Charlie Chaplin were blacklisted.

  7. Connection Joseph McCarthy’s Side 1. In the McCarthy Era, Joseph McCarthy uses the fear of communism to manipulate the people of America into thinking that the leadesr of the senate and congress are a bunch of dictators 2. Even though McCarthy didn't provide any real evidence of his accusations, he was still able to manage.

  8. Connection Jack’s side In the Lord of the Flies, Jack uses the boys’ fear of the beast to control their behavior. Afterwards, Jack had enough of Ralph and decided to create his own society Now that Jack segragated from the Ralph's control, Ralph look like he created a one man's army to defend himself, and made sneaky attacks to Jack's people, but was overwhelmed by Jack's forces
