  1. Practical Aspects of Cloud Computing: From fromMilitary ApplicationstoCNC Machining WCOS 2014 - BIT's 2nd Annual World Congress of Outsourcing Services 2014, Dalian, China JörnMehnen Cranfield University, UK j.mehnen@cranfield.ac.uk 28th June 2014

  2. Overview • Cloud Computing • A use case in military • Cloud Manufacturing – a new development • A use case in machining

  3. Cloud Computing

  4. Cloud Computing - Military application Now commonly referred to as Network Centric Operation (NCO), it is a new military doctrine or theory of war in the information age that seeks to translate an information advantage, enabled in part by information technology, into a competitive warfare advantage through the robust networking of well informed and geographically dispersed forces allowing new forms of organisationalbehaviour[U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) by Vice Admiral D. A. Cebrowsky and J. Gartska, 2009]. Typical Cloud infrastructure within a joint task force

  5. Cloud Computing - Military application Collaboration, information and data sharing, data integration, costs reduction, agility and flexibility within a coalition in the military operations can be exponentially improved by the Cloud implementation although the information becoming more amorphous on the "battlefield", can raise more or different risks compared with legacy systems, which might be better studied and investigated.

  6. Cloud Manufacturing • Cloud computing – provides services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, AssS) with high reliability, dynamic scalability, and availability over the Internet • Cloud manufacturing – is based on cloud computing and offers adaptive, secure and on-demand manufacturing services over the Internet of Things
