  2. What is MPLS • MPLS: Multi-Protocol Label Switching • Any-to-any connectivity ATM,FRAME,DSL,ETHER • Supports existing Legacy Protocols ATM, DSL • Implemented in 1998, Misknomers about solution • Provides a Fully Meshed Network Solution • Provides differentiated services Quality of Service (QOS) • Allows for convergence of Voice, Data, Video networks • Enhancing our Intranet/Extranet applications

  3. Today’s Challenges & Business Drivers • Separate networks for Voice, Video, Data • Separate Management; resources, bills, reports, SLAs • Issues with ; scalability, manageability, especially supporting each agencies individual requirements • Increased expertise on multiple platforms Increases of required on-line government applications • Lack of QoS/CoS Support & Redundancy • Increasing network costs while required to reduce overall expenditures • Lack of Interoperability • Poor bandwidth Utilization • Multiple access circuits to single site

  4. Tomorrow's Network Solution • MPLS/IP Network • Convergence - single Portal Access to all State applications and services • Any to any protocol Topology • Include next generation service such as VoIP, Video conferencing , Telehealth,Distant Learning • True Cost of Ownership • Other States who have moved to MPLS – • FL, SC, GA, CA, MA, WI, KY, and VA • With 60% of all other States pursuing solutions

  5. Star Configuration Fully Meshed Configuration Private IP Connectionless EnvironmentReduced Cost/Simplified Network Planning

  6. Projected Migration • Establish Major Connections to States 6513’s and 7609’s • Phase 1 (Starting June, 2008) • Convert existing ATM traffic to Direct PIP connections • Migrate existing Frame Relay traffic to MPLS Core • Phase 2 (Starting September, 2008) • Engage OT’s strategy of trusted & un-trusted networks and begin migrations • Expand campus backbone initiatives • Phase 3 (Oct/Nov 2008) • Provide VoIP service

  7. Benefits • State can customize network routing topology and establish VPN strategies with fully meshed architecture • Ability to Provide Disaster Recovery solution anywhere in the State • Verizon is responsible for backbone network pipes and sizing to support State’s Circuits • Provides smooth transition to the State’s new campus backbone core • Enables Voice / Data Convergence • Provides the State ability to provide central Firewall & Internet VPN configurations

  8. Frequently Asked Questions • How does this affect my agency? • Will agencies need to spend additional monies with MPLS implementation? • Will there be any major disruption of services? • When will my agency be migrated?
