  33. Project Valencia Towers Port of Valencia 4 - Examples of European projects for competitiveness.

  34. PROJECT ECOBUS • LIFE - Environment 2002 • 1.000.000 € from EU Collection and recycling system of vegetable used oils for its reuse as biofuel in the public fleet of buses in the municipality of Valencia http://www.ecobus.net

  35. http://www.ecobus.net

  36. Objectives • PROJECT ECOBUS • The main objective is the elimination of used cooking oils that are generated in a great scale at the city of Valencia (Spain) and to employ them in substitution of more polluting combustibles, reducing the emission of CO2 in public transport. • The project is intended to establish a pilot experience whose results serve as starting to set up an adequate collecting system for those waste vegetable oils coming from domestic and catering sector, and their chemical processing to produce bio-fuel to be used in Valencia’s buses municipal service http://www.ecobus.net Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  37. PROJECT URBANBAT • LIFE - Environment 2003 • 833.103€ from EU Integral management model of the liquid waste from the fleet of Buses of the municipal transport company in Valencia city http://www.urbanbat.com Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  38. http://www.urbanbat.com Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  39. Objectives • PROJECT URBANBAT • To define, through the transfer and application of BATs (Best available technologies), a waste management model for the majority of liquid residuals generated in the maintenance and operation of a fleet of vehicles. Management strategy for these residuals will consist of both reducing environmental hazard and increasing life span. This will take place at the very point of generation, thus minimizing the need for an external management. • To deal with most of the liquid residuals generated as cab washing waters, motor washing waters, waters from rinsing of cooling circuits, cooling fluids, brake fluids and acids from exhausted batteries. • Not only defining this model, but demonstrating its inmediate extrapolation from the fleet of urban collective vehicles in Valencia to any urban transport organisation and/or transport fleets, as well as to other activities with similar problems.

  40. PROJECT ECORICE • LIFE - Environment 2004 • 948.023 € from EU Innovative model of recycling of the straw of rice one of the principal waste generated in the withdrawal of the rice instead of the incineration Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  41. http://www.eco-rice.net

  42. Objectives • PROJECT ECORICE • Creation of a Transectoral Centre for waste reuse • and recycling of rice straw and other organic waste. • Generate organic blankets: • To be used in soils which are in the process of desertification or used for dry farming. • Savings in water consumption for irrigation. • Elimination of the air pollution protecting the Natural Park ecosystem Length Period:  1/12/2004 – 30/06/2007 Budget: 1.962.795 EUR (948.023 € from LIFE funds) Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  43. PROJECT SIMPYC • LIFE - Environment 2004 • 830.026 € from EU To establish a network of cooperation among the ports of some cities to exchange the experiences and knowledge techniques, to find solutions and to improve the relation between port-city http://www.simpyc.info Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  44. http://www.simpyc.info

  45. Objectives • PROJECT SIMPYC • Demonstrate the socio-economic importance of ports and their relationship with environmental conservation. • Coordinate environmental management processes carried out in urban environments and port areas. • Develop joint port-city environmental management initiatives, emphasizing monitoring and control of noise pollution and undesirable visual impacts. • Create awareness amongst the general public about the importance of the coastal environment and the need for its conservation Length Period:  1/11/2004 – 31/07/2007 Budget: 1.720.049 EUR (830.026 € from LIFE funds)

  46. PROJECT ECODIPTERA • Use of larval flies to transform pig slurryinto fertilizers and protein • Implementation of a management model for the ecologically sustainable treatment of pig manure in the area of Los Serranos • Budget: 1.595.266€ • www.ecodiptera.info

  47. Objectives • PROJECT ECODIPTERA Project Background The huge volume of pig manure generated across Europe, and its customary use as fertiliser for agriculture, is the cause of serious environmental problems. These include the leaching of high nitrogen, which causes an excess nutrient enrichment of soil and water, and the emission of odours and greenhouse gases. Furthermore, the use of manure for fertiliser can result in the spreading of pathogenic micro−organisms that can be transferred from animals to people, being spread through air and water. Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  48. Objectives • PROJECT ECODIPTERA Project Objectives The project’s main objective is to demonstrate a novel method of treating pig manure. Insects (mainly flies) are used to decompose the waste and transform it into high quality fertiliser that can be applied without negative impacts on environment or health. The compost will be used to fertilise parks, gardens and green areas of the surrounding towns, thereby supporting a campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of the new, environmentally friendly technique. Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life

  49. PROJECT ZERO PLUS • LIFE - Environment 2005 • 2.567.609€ Integral liquid waste management model for surface treatment industries through BATs Programme: LIFE-Environment www.europa.eu.int/comm/environment/life
