Objective After this activity, you will be able to identify organisms in three different relationships: • Producer/Consumer • Predator/Prey • Parasite/Host To navigate through the upcoming slides, click on the titles to learn about each relationship. Next Slide
Main Menu • Producer/Consumer • Predator/Prey • Parasite/Host When you are finished with the lesson, click on the test to the right to take the quiz.
Producer/Consumer • Producer • Consumer Main Menu
Producer Producers are generally plants, and they use a process called photosynthesis to make their own food. Follow this link to see the chemical formula for photosynthesis. Examples: alfalfa grass, mesquite trees, and sunflowers
Consumer • Consumers eat other organisms to gain energy. • Primary Consumers eat Producers • Secondary Consumers eat other Consumers. • Examples: Mule Deer, Yellow Catfish, Killer Whales
Predator/Prey • Predator • Prey Main Menu
Predator • Predators eat other animals to gain energy. • They are Secondary Consumers. • Examples: Grey wolves, Mountain Lions, Bull snakes
Prey • A prey species is eaten by a predator, so it can have energy. • The prey can be a primary consumer OR secondary consumer. • Examples: Mice, Shad, Seals
Parasite/Host • Parasite • Host Main Menu
Parasite • A parasite invades another organism and sucks nutrients from it to gain energy. • Examples: Ticks, fleas, ring worms
Host • The host is the organism the parasite has invaded. • Serious diseases are caused by some parasites. • The species of fleas that invade prairie dogs carry the Bubonic Plague. • Examples: Dogs, Humans, any large organism.
Identify which of these two organisms is the prey species. Mouse Bull snake Click on the skull next to the correct answer.
Identify which of these two organisms is the producer. Mule Deer Alfalfa
Identify which of these two organisms is the parasite species. Tick Dog
Identify which of these two organisms is the consumer. Sunflower Bobwhite quail
Identify which of these two organisms is the host species. Flea Prairie Dogs
Identify which of these two organisms is the predator species. Killer Whale Seal
WELL DONE! As you go from here, focus on how each of these three relationships affect all living organisms including humans.
