  1. The Dominance Dependence Model A model to explain why development has happened for some nations but not for others.

  2. The Dominance Dependence model The dominance dependence model tries to explain why development has no occurred for less developed nations. Former colonial powers still dominate in trade relationships with less developed nations which leads these nations to dependency on the former for finance, expertise and trade. What are examples of the colonial powers? What are some examples of less developed nations? What are some examples of nations that have reached economic development without being colonial powers?

  3. 18th Century world. Eighteenth century world was largely under-developed. At the self-reliance stages of development. The world then went 2 separate ones. Nations became economic super powers or providers for these super powers.

  4. Western world The uprise of the Industrial revolution meant that raw materials were needed to fuel the new manufacturing industries. The countries going through the industrial revolution carried out aggressive colonial policies and built empires to gain access to these resources.

  5. Western world These nations experienced high rates of production and affluence throughout the 20th century.

  6. Non-developed world The rest of the world became part of the political and economic empires of the colonial powers and remained largely undeveloped. These colonies acted as cheap providers for the mother country which resulted in an impoverished resource base, exploited agriculture and mining, and discouragement of manufacturing.

  7. Non-developed world By the late twentieth century most of the developing countries through politically ‘independent’ had a few rich people and a large majority of extremely poor. To keep their head above water they needed to remain dependant on the developed world.
