1. Compass Points & Bearings • Compass Points: • Compass points are used to show direction on a compass rose, the cardinal points (also known as the principle points) are North, East, South, & West) • Ordinal Points: • The halfway points between the cardinal (principle) points – NE, SE, SW, NW
Compass Bearings • Measure the angle of a direction in relation to the North arrow. Open your books to page 31
2. Grid System • Alphanumeric grid system • Uses letters and numerals to identify locations within a particular square in a grid system. Numbers are put on the X axis, and letters on the Y axis.

4-Digit military grid reference • Combine the easting (vertical lines) and northing (horizontal lines) numbers by following the horizontal & vertical axis. The easting number is always listed first.
