The Smoking Gun Kevin Juan
Summary • The ethical dilemma of marketing E-cigarettes • The stakeholders of this new medium of smoking • The facts • Positives vs. Negatives • Recommendation
How are vape pipes different from e-cigarettes? • They are essentially the SAME THING! • Cartridge of liquid nicotine • Variety of flavors, including tobacco • Cleaner than traditional cigarettes
Who are the stakeholders?Society! Positives Negatives Marketing is deceptive -Relies on ignorance of a new product Addiction is still possible Kid’s love the flavors 1940’s revisited Still very annoying • Cleaner for society than cigarettes • No Smelly clothes, cleaner air, butts! • No tobacco, no tar • May be a healthier option than smoking tobacco.
Ethical Problem- Duty Based • People do not know what’s in them • The freedom of this market takes advantage of previous problems with smoking • Flavor’s attract children • They focus on the attraction of the product instead of how to use them - Ten puffs per hour? Who is going to do that? • New packs of NJOY come with no instructions 2014 onward. • 1 E-cig nicotine > 2 packs of cigarettes • Technically could be more addicting than cigarettes, but they wont tell you that
Why would vape-pipes want to disassociate from E-Cigs? • CIGARETTES IS A BAD WORD! • Vapes are considered a more versatile category than cigarettes -You can smoke other stuff • Cigarettes = tobacco • No stigma associated with vapor • More vape companies than E-CIGs
Applying Utilitarianism • What is the usefulness of E-CIG’s -Cleaner environment -Safer for the O-zone -Cleaner Air for the non-smokers • People are going to smoke anyway -It maybe annoying, but now there is less harm to non-smokers -Unless you like fruity flavored smoke
Recommendation • E-CIG companies should be legally required to include recommended smoking instructions in packaging. • Freedom of choice is important, but rights to knowledge should be mandatory to all stakeholders. • Children should be educated about E-CIGS in elementary schools. • Government health tests should cover E-CIGS. • E-CIGS and tobacco both have cancerous potential -It’s up to people to decide, with the knowledge they know, to smoke or not to smoke.
