  2. Background: Katosi Women’s Development Trust is a grassroots organization working to improve the sanitation and general living standards of its community, the small fishing village of Katosi, on the shores of Lake Victoria. KWDT has already donated and constructed rain collection tanks in 4 local schools, and my research this summer was to assess and expand the functioning of their sanitation and hygiene programs in these 4 schools. Goals: Monitor and assess the existing school health programs Summarize and present my findings to the organization as constructive feedback Expand and improve the program in the initial 4 schools and eventually spread to other schools EXPERIENCE UGANDA!

  3. Project Results: Assessed the existing sanitation facilities in each of the 4 schools Constructed “tippy-taps” for hand washing in the schools and taught students and faculty how to use and maintain them Designed a health curriculum and delivered it to 5-7th graders in each school Served as the mentor for the School Health Club at Saint Joseph’s Secondary school Began the initial establishment of sustainable school health committees at each school IMMERSED MYSELF IN UGANDAN CULTURE AND DAILY LIFE, REALIZED A LOVE FOR TEACHING, LEARNED A LOT ABOUT MYSELF AND THE WORLD IN GENERAL, AND HAD A TRULY INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE.
