Student Schedules Billy Terrell MS-4 3/02/09
What to Schedule • Depends on intended Specialty • No “cookie cutter” approach, even within specialty • Read the course syllabus in the Senior Handbook • http://musom.marshall.edu/students/senior-handbook/ • Allow for time to “make up” procedure/patient encounter logger in Spring.
What is Required! • EMS 744 - Emergency Medicine – 4 weeks • MED 744 - Internal Medicine – 4 weeks • SUR 744 - Surgery – 3 weeks Specialty+ 1 week anesthesiology • ACA2CK - Step 2 CK • ACA2CS - Step 2 CS • EMS 720 - ACLS – 1 week credit for 2 days work! • Can be taken early at KDMC or St. Mary’s if on away rotation
When to take Step 2 CKFactors to Consider • Candidacy for Residency • Does your application need a boost? • If you perform worse than on Step 1, this is an interview flag. • Preparation • How did you perform on mini-boards? Do you need extra study time? • Coordinating with other activities • Audition Rotations, Application Deadlines, Graduation requirements, and Interviews.
How to Prepare for Step 2 CK • More Variable: • **Kaplan/USMLE World QBANK • Both are GREAT! I recommend World- SAME format as actual test. • Step 2 Review Course – Pretty Good • First Aid Step 2 – ok, not the best • Step Up to Medicine – Great, but long. • Secrets – Very popular – detailed • Crush Step 2 – Very Popular – very general • Main Focus of test: • Internal Medicine – As pathology was to Step 1 • OB/GYN & Pediatrics – We typically perform well here • Surgery (subspecialties) – Use Qbank for review • *Neurology/Biostats – Fill in your knowledge gaps. • *Psychiatry – First Aid for Psychiatry
When to Take Step 2 CS • Note MUSOM “sit by” date! (December 31st) • Register early (5 months ahead) to get desired test date • Administered by USMLE, not Prometrix (Different test center) • Testing Center Locations http://www.usmle.org/examinations/step2/cs/CSECAddresses.html • Take early into 4th year • Absolutely NO advantage waiting, your skills get rusty. • To Prepare: Use First Aid for Step 2 CS • Read all mini- cases • FCH 800 – Outpatient Family Medicine / FCH 888 – Rural Family Med. • Watch introductory video on NBME website • http://www.usmle.org/Examinations/step2/step2cs.html
