However, please limit your slides to <=5, and prepare for a 5 minute presentation, so there is plenty of time for discussion of the snapshots. If using this deck, please delete this textbox.
Program Elements • 29 Bioengineering undergraduates • Last year was first offering, 21 students • 2 quarter sequence • Q1: needs evaluation, generate concept, electromechanical and mol bio labs • Q2: prototyping, design of experiment, iteration
Novel Feature • Start with GI problems, technology agnostic • Devices work in GI • Bacteria lives in GI • Form mixed teams with both cellular and device engineering interests • Teams select technological after need
Best Practices • Obesity project • We expected either minimally invasive device, or smart phone app • Students designed fat metabolizing bacteria with feedback circuit to avoid “over-eating” • Success requires co-instructor model
Year 1 Outcomes • 3 device solutions, 2 cellular engineering • Cellular engineering • Obesityprobiotic • Post-operative blockage diagnostic • Device engineering • Gall stone retrograde removal • Diarrhea retainer • Colonoscopy prep “smart cup”
