  1. Our Focus

  2. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Remember! Course 1 Quotient 0.15 0.75 5 Divisor Dividend

  3. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Course 1 Additional Example 1A: Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number Find the quotient. 0.84 ÷ 3 0. 2 8 3 0.84 – 6 24 – 24 0

  4. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Course 1 Additional Example 1B: Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number Find the quotient. 3.56 ÷ 4 0. 8 9 4 3.56 – 32 36 – 36 0

  5. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Course 1 Check It Out: Example 1B Find the quotient. 2.96 ÷ 4 0. 7 4 4 2.96 – 28 16 – 16 0

  6. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Substitute 9 for x. Sometimes you need to use a zero as a placeholder. 9 > 3, so place a zero in the quotient and divide 9 into 36. Course 1 Additional Example 2A: Evaluating Decimal Expressions Evaluate 0.936 ÷ x for the given value of x. x = 9 0.936 ÷ x 0.936 ÷ 9 0. 1 0 4 9 0.936 – 9 3 – 0 36 – 36 0

  7. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Remember! Multiplication can “undo” division. To check your answer to a division problem, multiply the divisor by the quotient. Course 1

  8. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Course 1 Check It Out: Example 3 Ty and three of his friends are building a fence. The lumber cost $21.44. If they share the cost equally, how much should each person pay? $21.44 should be divided into four equal groups. Divide $21.44 by 4. $5. 3 6 4 $21.44 – 20 14 – 12 Check 24 5.36  4 = 21.44 – 24 Each person should pay $5.36. 0

  9. 3-6 Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers Course 1 Insert Lesson Title Here Lesson Quiz Find each quotient. 1. 3.12 ÷ 8 2. 5.68 ÷ 8 Evaluate the expression 1.25 ÷ x for the given value of x. 3.x = 5 4.x = 25 5. The tennis team is having 3 of their tennis rackets restrung. The total cost is $54.75. What is the average cost per racket? 0.71 0.39 0.25 0.05 $18.25

  10. 3-7 Dividing by Decimals Multiply the divisor and dividend by the same power of ten. There is one decimal place in the divisor. Multiply by 101, or 10. Think: 1.3 x 10 = 13 5.2 x 10 = 52 Divide. Course 1 Additional Example 1A: Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal Find the quotient. 5.2 ÷ 1.3 1.3 5.2 4 13 52 –52 0 5.2 ÷ 1.3 = 4

  11. 3-7 Dividing by Decimals 36 6,130.000 Think: 0.36 x 100 = 36 61.3 x 100 = 6,130 Make the divisor a whole number by multiplying the divisor and dividend by 102, or 100. Course 1 Additional Example 1B: Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal 61.3 ÷ 0.36 0.36 61.30

  12. 3-7 Dividing by Decimals 24 5120.00 Think: 0.24 x 100 = 24 51.2 x 100 = 5,120 Make the divisor a whole number by multiplying the divisor and dividend by 102, or 100. Course 1 Check It Out: Example 1B 51.2 ÷ 0.24 0.24 51.2 0

  13. 3-7 Dividing by Decimals Course 1 Insert Lesson Title Here Lesson Quiz Find each quotient. 1. 49 ÷ 0.7 2. 21.63 ÷ 2.1 3. 38.43 ÷ 6.1 4. 16.9 ÷ 5.2 5. John spent $13.44 renting 4 videos for the weekend. What was the cost per video? 70 10.3 6.3 3.25 $3.36
