  5. Important Events 1808– Coffee is introduced & becomesthe principal crop. It was the number one cash crop for several decades. • 1940-44 – A series of liberal reforms take hold which included recognition of workers’ rights & a minimum wage. • 2007 – Government declares goal to be first voluntarily ‘carbon neutral’country by 2021.

Juan SantamariaAugust 29, 1831 - April 11, 1856 Juan Santamaria was a poor laborer who volunteered to fight in Nicaragua against American filibuster William Walker who was attempting to conquer many Central American countries. In Rivas, Juan crossed enemy lines, attempting to set fire to a soldier hostel knowing that he would most likely die. He was shot multiple times resulting in his death but he was able to start the fire which soon marked the Costa Rican victory. Later, he was named the National Hero in honor of his loyalty and courage, and for freeing his people.

  7. Current Issues Law Enforcement Corruption For years the police in Costa Rica have been accused of many unlawful actions. Cases have been brought to court but the police always find their way out. People feel that the corruption in due to a lack in training and education. Deforestation Much of the forest is constantly being cleared for cattle and agriculture. About 20,000 acres of land are cleared annually. Steps have been taken in order to improve the situation but laws are very lenient with land that is not nationally protected. Rising Fiscal Deficit • For the past two years the government debts have been growing rapidly. Fernando Herrero, the finance minister said in late 2010, “The deficit will result in grave macroeconomic instability if we don’t do something soon.” To try and improve the issue they are considering enforcing a fixed income tax of 15% on interest, dividends and rent that will greatly affect the residents of Costa Rica.

  8. Cultural Aspect: Food Food plays a very large role in the lives of Ticos (Costa Ricans). It represent much more than what it really is. Though people are separated by many different things, anyone can come together and eat. The many influences that play a role in the culture of Costa Rica come together in the country's food. Spanish, American, Caribbean and Southern American influences and the most prominent.
