  12. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) To obtain their VCE, your daughter must successfully complete at least 16 units of VCE or VCE VET subjects. A “unit” is a subject that goes for one semester. For example: English will count as 2 units. English Unit 1 is studied in semester 1 and English Unit 2 is studied in semester 2.

  13. The VCE The VCE is awarded on the basis of satisfactory completion of units. The VCE provides a certificate based on the completion of units as well as a study score that contributes towards an ATAR.

  14. Unit Results Satisfactory Result — S for a unit • all outcomes are achieved satisfactorily. Not Satisfactory Result — N for a unit • the work is not of the required standard • the student has failed to meet a school deadline • the work cannot be authenticated • there has been a substantial breach of rules, including attendance rules.

  15. Unit Results – S and N The only way to get an S for the unit is to get an S for every outcome!

  16. Minimum Requirements to achieve the VCE In the 16 units studied, your daughter must: • satisfactorily complete three units from the English group, with at least one unit at Unit 3 or 4 level; • complete three sequences of Units 3 and 4 studies other than English, including VCE VET Unit 3 and 4 sequences.

  17. School Assessment Units 1 and 2: • The school will set a range of Assessment Tasks for students to complete in each of the units they are enrolled in. • These will be reported on in the official Marian College School Reports but are not passed on to VCAA. • To go on to Year 12 a student must satisfactorily complete 9 units in Year 11.

  18. School Assessment Units 3 and 4: Internal Assessment: School Assessed Coursework (SACs) and/or School Assessed Tasks External Assessment: Examinations set by VCAA Written and performance exams General Achievement Test (GAT) All assessment is moderated by VCAA.

  19. Acceleration and Enhancement • Interested students can apply to do a Unit 3 & 4 sequence at Year 11 • Students who achieve high results in a Unit 3&4 sequence at Year 11 may go on to study a university level Enhancement Study in Year 12

  20. Attendance • Students are expected to attend 100% of classes in every subject. • The minimum attendance for satisfactory completion of a unit is 90%. • Occasional absences due to: • School Related Activities • Illness • Family reasons

  21. Attendance Explanations for Absence: • School Related Activities – students must inform teachers before the event and gain permission to attend. • Illness - The medical certificate must be given to the Mentor teacher as soon as you return to school. • Family reasons – In extenuating circumstances the Year Level Leader should be contacted as soon as possible to discuss the circumstances. External evidence required.

  22. Attendance Holidays • The school does not support students missing classes to go on holidays. • Any absence related to holidays will affect the student’s attendance requirements and their ability to successfully complete units of work. • Missing four lessons will take the student’s attendance below the 90% required for Satisfactory Completion.

  23. Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) • The new nationally agreed for tertiary entrance ranking • Change in name only – calculation will remain the same • All references to the ENTER will be replaced by the ATAR • Scaling – not a way to choose subjects!!

  24. Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning - VCAL • An accredited senior secondary school qualification undertaken by students in Years 11 and 12. • The qualification aims to provide the skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable students to choose pathways to work and further education. • Student interests, new pathways and applied learning are the underpinning principles.

  25. VCAL Learning Programs To meet learning needs of individual students: • Foundation • Intermediate • Senior

  26. VCAL Curriculum Strands Literacy & numeracy skills (VCAL Literacy and VCAL Numeracy) Industry Specific Skills (satisfied by VET certificate or School Based New Apprenticeship) Work Related Skills Personal Development Skills

  27. Who is VCAL for? • Students seeking a vocational pathway on completion of school • Students who learn best where learning is practical and ‘applied’ • Students who do not want or need an ATAR

  28. VCAL as a senior school certificate VCAL is a alternative senior school certificate • Competency in VCAL is 10 Units (made up of VCAL, VET or VCE subjects) • Choice of units may lead to students to acquire • VCAL Certificate • VCE Statement of Results for the studies satisfactorily completed • TAFE Certificate

  36. So How Does it all Work…? • Students will then be interviewed by a subject selection counsellor to discuss their program of studies for the following year. • We will have access to the student’s Semester 1 report and this will provide a guide to the discussion and the subject choices.

  37. So How Does it all Work…? • Students’ choices will be used to generate a timetable. • If the units selected clash or if the units do not run due to low enrolment numbers, the highest preference will be chosen and a reserve subject will be added to the subjects.

  38. Important Notes • While Marian College offers a comprehensive range of studies, not all units will be offered if numbers in classes are low. • Changes to programs are limited to the transition classes. Students will be expected to have their subjects “locked in” by 2013
