BLOG: Timeless Issues Caring For Your Loved Ones Who Are Suffering From Mental Illness When you are living with someone who is suffering from mental illness, it can bring quite some challenges for you. Mental health problems differ greatly in causes and severity. Mild problems can be helped with support and understanding but more severe disorders like depression, Alzheimer’s, and likewise pose more challenges. Symptoms of mental illness · They have an empty gaze and appear to be far away · They counter difficulty while expressing themselves as well as during concentration. · They think other people can read their mind. · They claim to hear voices in their mind. · They take drugs or consume alcohol. · They have trouble eating. They either eat too much or eat too little. · They face trouble during their sleep. · They tend to isolate themselves from everyone else in their bedroom or elsewhere. Here is how you can take care of your loved one and handle any critical situation smoothly · Be Informed To understand the patient’s illness and their condition better, you need to have knowledge about the illness they have. For that, you can attend various support groups of members who have taken care or are now taking care of people going through the same mental illness. You can also attend training sessions or conferences, watch shows about that subject, read articles, papers, and books on that matter. This would provide with vast knowledge about the person’s illness and make you feel confident when any serious situation arrives. It would help you to understand all the do’s and don’ts in a particular situation. · Develop a positive approach Showing a positive approach towards the patient and letting them know that you are putting yourself in their shoes and understanding the pain and suffering they are going through would help them not only to recover but also to stay in a better mental headspace. Avoid dictating or preaching to them. Always congratulate them when they undergo positive changes. Always remember that you have to be patient when you are living with mental patients. The road towards the recovery might be difficult and long and sometimes there is no recovery even, but you have to stay strong no matter what. · Encourage them to seek professional assistance People who are suffering from mental illness often refrain from going to a doctor and seek professional help. They fail to recognize that it is an essential step for recovering from the
