Copy and Paste Word Data into an Excel Worksheet • Microsoft Office is a suite that allows integration, which is the combining of data from two or more programs into one document. • Integration can occur by copying and pasting data between programs. • The program containing the data to be copied is called the source program, and the program where the data is pasted is called the destination program.
Copy and Paste Word Data into an Excel Worksheet…continued To copy data from Word to Excel: • Open Word and Excel and the desired documents. • Select the desired data in Word. • Click the Copy button. • Click the Excel button on the Taskbar. • Position the insertion point at the desired location. • Click the Paste button. Link an Excel Worksheet with a Word Document • If you regularly update data that is copied to other programs, consider copying and linking the data. • When data is linked, the data exists in the source program but not as separate data in the destination program. • The destination program contains only a code that identifies the name and location of the source program, document, and the location in the document. • Since the data is located only in the source program, changes made to the data in the source program are reflected in the destination program.

Update Linked Data To update linked data: • Open the document in the source program. • Make the desired edits. • Save and close the document. • Open the document in the destination program. • Save and close the document. edit
View a Link To display a linked object as an icon: • Select the object. • Right-click in the object. • Point to Linked Worksheet Object and then click the Convert option. • At the Convert dialog box, click Display as icon check box. • Click OK. Convert option Convert dialog box

Embed an Excel Worksheet into a Word Document • You can copy an object between documents in a program, link an object, or embed an object. • A linked object resides in the source program but not as a separate object in the destination program. • An embedded object resides in the document in the source program as well as the destination program. • If a change is made to an embedded object at the source program, the change is not made to the object in the destination program.

Edit an Embedded Object To edit an embedded object: • In the source program, double-click the embedded object. • Make the desired edits. • Click outside the object. embedded object
Troubleshoot Linking and Embedding Problems • If you double-click a linked or embedded object and a message appears telling you that the source file or source program cannot be opened, consider the following troubleshooting options: • Make sure the source program is installed on your computer. • If the source program is not installed, convert the object to the file format of a program that is installed. • Try closing other programs to free memory and make sure you have enough memory to run the source program. • Make sure the source program does not have any dialog boxes open. If it is a linked object, check to make sure someone else is not working in the source file.
