Learn how to measure volume for liquids and regular solids using different instruments and units. Includes practice exercises and review of concepts.
E N D
TOPIC: Measurement Aim: How do we measure volume? Do Now: 1. Take out Scientific Method # 4 ISA. 2. Copy the topic and aim into your class notes. 3. Identify the SI unit for length. HW: Finish Scientific Method Worksheet from yesterday.
Scientific Method Practice #4 ISA Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same tasks (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made.

1. Measure the length of the pencil in cm to the nearest tenth. 2. Measure the length of the pencil in mm. 7.5cm 75mm
Did you know… The basking shark and the white whale are the world’s largest sharks with the largest volumes. They are also the least dangerous sharks. Basking Shark White Whale
The amount of SPACEan object takes up SI UNITS = Liquid: mL or L Solid: cm3 1 mL = 1 cm3 Volume
1. RegularSolid: V = L x W x H How is volume measured?
Ex: L =2 cm, W=1 cm, H=1 cm V =2cm x 1cm x 1cm V = 2 cm3
V = L x W x H 2cm x 3cm x 5cm V = 30 cm3
TOPIC: Measurement Aim: How do we measure volume? Do Now: 1. Take out yesterday's HW ditto. 2. Take out your volume notes. HW: Measuring Volume Worksheet #’s 1 – 3 (Back of length ditto)

Number of bacteria in a sample Correct or Incorrect? Support your answer. INCORRECT!!! 1. No consistent interval on the Y-axis. 2. The # of boxes skipped between each # on the X-axis is not consistent.
Independent variable? Day Number of bacteria in a sample Dependent variable? Number of bacteria in a sample State the relationship between the days and the number of bacteria in a sample. As the days increase, the number of bacteria in the sample increases.
Let’s review… • Describe volume. How do we measure the volume of a regular solid? • Identify the units that are used to measure the volume of a regular solid. • How do we measure the volume of a liquid? • Identify the units that are used to measure the volume of a liquid.
5.5 mL 26 mL
3.Irregular solid: Displacement V with object - V w/o object
V = 9 – 7= 2 V = 2 mL V1 = 7 mL V2= 9 mL
260mL – 200mL = 60mL V1 = 200 mL V2 = 260 mL
Let’s summarize… Describe what is measured when you are measuring volume. Identify the instrument used to measure volume of a liquid. Identify the instrument used to measure volume a regular solid. What are the units used when measuring the volume of a liquid? Of a solid?
Let’s summarize… Explain how the volume of a certain amount of liquid is measured. Explain how the volume of a regular solid is determined. Explain how displacement is used to measure the volume of an irregular solid
1. Identify the name of this method used to find the volume of a ball. DISPLACEMENT 2. Determine the volume of the ball. 25mL V = 40mL V = 65mL 65mL – 40mL = 25mL
Determine the volume. L x W x H 10cm x 5cm x 3cm = 150cm3
Correct or incorrect? INCORRECT!!! On the Y-axis, the # of boxes skipped between each number is inconsistent.
Independent variable? Day Dependent variable? Concentration of estrogen State the relationship between the days and the concentration of estrogen in a sample. As the days increase, the concentration of estrogen in the sample increases, decreases and increases .
Correct or Incorrect? Support your answer. CORRECT!!!
