Baskets The Baskets turned out to be one of the best ideas I have ever had. I had seen some beautiful Indian baskets at the Washington State Historical Society and I was struck by the grace of their slumped, sagging forms. I wanted to capture this in glass. The breakthrough for me was recognizing that heat and gravity were the tools to be used to make these forms. --- Chihuly
Garfield Park Conservatory • Art in a natural setting • Opened in November 2001 • The huge success of the exhibition has caused it to be extended from May to September 2002 • Two acre long glassed in tropical gardens • Thirty separate installations of art
Chandeliers • What makes the chandeliers work for me is the massing of color. If you take up to thousands of blown pieces of one color, put them together and then shoot light through them, now that's going to be something to look at. Now you hang it in space and it becomes mysterious, defying gravity or seemingly out of place. Something you have never seen before. --- Chihuly

Reeds and Spears • In Finland we started making these long, cylindrical pieces that looked like spears. This was an exciting new form. It was the first time we ever made anything like that. Sometimes I call them spears and sometimes I call them reeds. They can be taken anywhere—they can go outside. They are very strong pieces, and they are very dramatic. --- Chihuly
