Lisbon System - International Registration of Appellations of Origin • an international system facilitates the protection of a special category of such geographical indications, i.e. “appellations of origin”, in countries other than the country of origin • Protection of national economic interests, in many countries, for goods bearing an appellation of origin

  25. Lisbon Union Assembly (September 2009) • Mandated the WG on the Development of the Lisbon System to • look for improvements of the Lisbon system which would make the system more attractive for States and users, while preserving the principles and objectives of the Lisbon Agreement

Working Group progress • The WG considered draft provisions on various topics, notably; • Definitions • Procedures for international applications and registration • Scope of protection • Prior users • Applications for trans-border AOs or GIs • Accession criteria for IGOs (e.g., EU, OAPI) • Revision Lisbon Agreement? New treaty? • Study on the possibility of dispute settlement within the Lisbon system
