Taking apart the prompt • Circle, Box, Underline • This helps visual learners and sets a pattern. • Circle all verbs. • Box nouns and ? words:(who, what, when, where, why) • Underline the topic. • Write down for organization. • Write • Explaining why • It is sometimes necessary to take a chance
Introduction (2-3 lines) • Do’s • Capture the reader’s attention. (Hook) • State the issue. • Thesis • Don’ts • DO NOT introduce yourself as the author • “Hi, my name is Jackie and I am going to write about..” • DO NOT begin with “I am going to write to you about….”
BODy (20 lines) • Each body focuses on the topic. • Use details from your life or research based on personal examples. • Use an example to prove it to the reader. (support) • Topic Sentence: The main topic of the essay is stated. • Reason/Detail/Fact: Give the reader a main reason, detail, or fact that relates to and supports the topic. • Explain/Example: Give an example for the statement made in the reason/detail/fact sentence.
Conclusion (2 -3 lines) • Sum up the entire writing piece. • Rephrase the thesis • Tie back to the central idea. • Universal truth or Truism
