  1. While you are waiting for the lesson to begin… Read the following extract and explain – what tone is set by the writer of this article? One-third 'unsure' on digital TV One-third of the UK population is unsure about how to get ready for the switchover to digital TV, according to a National Audit Office (NAO) report. It also says half of retail staff do not have enough knowledge to properly advise on buying digital equipment. And it warns there could be a surplus of £250m in licence fee cash after a possible overestimate of the cost of a BBC-run switchover help scheme.   3. Examination: In question 2b, you will be expected to comment on a writer’s language use. This could include the tone that they achieve. You will need to use PEEE in order to answer this question effectively. Read the text “Conspiracy Theory” and write down what the MAIN points of the article are. What tone is created in the article? Use PEEE to justify your response.

  5. Read Item 1, the extract called Why No-One Walks from a book by Bill Bryson. What methods does Bryson use to entertain the reader? Top Tip: In answering the question, try to establish the tone of the article and work out the methods by which – how - Bill Bryson creates the tone of the text. Use PEEE to justify your response!

  6. Exam Practise Answer the following questions; In no more than 100 words, describe the issue Bill Bryson is discussing in the extract ‘Why no one walks’. How can the reader tell that Bryson does not agree with his neighbour’s driving all the time? Time limit: 30 minutes

SUCCESS CRITERIA Find one example in their writing where the have written less formally than would be expected in an exam situation!
