Why integrate the two? • What is Public Health 101? • It is NOT part of the undergraduate degree! • It is a General Education course in Social and Behavioral Sciences. • Usually taken by undergrads in first 60 credit hours. • Where are we with PH-101? • Syllabus developed, course approved (3 credit hours) • Starts this Fall (August!), Tues & Thurs 08:00-09:15 • Text has changed, need course and class plans
Why integrate these two? • What are Teaching & Learning Workshops? • Conversations on techniques and ideas for teaching and learning • Part of our faculty development plan • Part of our i2a plan
Why integrate the two? • It’s an ideal opportunity for discussions of teaching and learning using an example. • Our example: implementing Public Health 101 • Presenting public health in an integrated approach • Class plans using existing and innovative T&L techniques and tools • Course plans using existing technology • What better way to begin our discussions on teaching and learning than using T&L techniques as in integral part of the discussion?
How are the two integrated? • Public Health 101 Working Group • Meets 1st Monday of each month to review and plan • Subgroups develop implementation plans for sections of the course • Subgroups present plans in workshops • Teaching & Learning Workshop Planning Group • Meets 2nd Thursday of each month to review and plan • Plans and promotes workshops with External Affairs • Integrated Teaching & Learning Workshops • Held 4th Friday of each month through October • First part: Presentation of section of course Updates of previously presented sections • Second part: Presentation of T&L techniques and ideas
Brief overview of Public Health 101 • Description, Course Objectives, Policies, General Education Learning Outcomes – done • Text – changed after syllabus completed • Classes and Topics – being redeveloped • Course and class implementation – being developed • Student Evaluation – done • Five-minute class summaries with rubric • Exams (3) • Journal (electronic) with rubric • Essay with rubric • Field trip (extra credit)
