VALUE. Value: Darks and Lights in Artwork. VALUE CREATES CONTRAST! For example…If the words you are reading now were in a dark gray would they be easier to read? Probably not. That is CONTRAST!

Value: Darks and Lights in Artwork VALUE CREATES CONTRAST! For example…If the words you are reading now were in a dark graywould they be easier to read? Probably not. That is CONTRAST! VALUE MAKES THINGS LOOK 3D! When light hits something it creates a highlight and then as you move further away from the light…you see shadows.
Look at this cone. Where is the light hitting it? What part of the cone is furthest away from the light source?
We will be creating our own Value scales. 1. See if you can label: HIGHLIGHT, MIDTONE and SHADOW. 2. For fun, come up with names for all your different values. (Snowfall, lightning, Dad’s hair, soot, vampire bat…be creative!)
So…how does VALUE apply to our portraits? Can you find a highlight? Midtone? Shadow? What is causing them?
When you look at your face…imagine it as a black and white photo. Remember all the shades of gray are values!
