  1. The Planets of the Solar System -How many planets are there in the solar system? -What is the order of the planets? -What are some fun facts about the planets?

  2. How do I Use This Activity? Tool Bar: • Back: Click to go back to the previous slide • Home: Click to go back to the main menu • Help: Click to return to instructions • Next: Click to continue to the next slide.

  3. Why is the Solar System Important? • The Solar System is Important because if it didn’t exist then neither would we!

  4. Why do we Need Planets? • We live on a planet (Earth) • Astronomers study the planets to learn more about Earth and the solar system.

  5. How Many Planets are There? • Until just a few years ago there were nine planets. But because Pluto is not considered a planet anymore now there are officially 8 planets in the solar system.

  6. Why is Pluto Not a Planet? Planets must have 3 things: • They need to orbit the sun. • They need to have enough gravity to pull themselves into a ball. • They need to have cleared out all other objects from their orbit Pluto does NOT meet requirement #3

  7. The Order of the Planets SUN • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars • Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

  8. How can I Remember the Order of the Planets? Here’s a fun saying that can help! My very educated mother just served us nachos!

  9. CHECK IT OUT! SUN MY – Mercury SERVED - Saturn VERY – Venus US - Uranus EDUCATED – Earth NACHOS - Neptune MOTHER – Mars JUST – Jupiter

  10. Let’s See How Much You Remember!! • Were going to take a short Quiz to see how much you remember from the lesson so far! • Don’t panic! Take a deep breath and do your best! • Hit the next button to begin the quiz. • Hit the square next to the letter of the answer that you think is correct!

  11. As of today, how many official planets are there in the solar system? • 7 • 8, because Pluto is not a planet anymore • 8, because Pluto is now considered a planet Click this if You want to go Back to the Directions! Click the yellow square next to the answer that you think is correct!

  12. CORRECT! Hit the next arrow to move on to the next question!

  13. NICE TRY! CORRECT ANSWER: • B, because Pluto is not a planet anymore Hit the next button to move on to the next question!

  14. What planet is the 5th planet from the sun? • Earth • Mars • Jupiter • Venus

  15. CORRECT! Click next to move on to the next slide

  16. NICE TRY! CORRECT ANSWER: C) Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun Click the next button to move on!

  17. Click on the Yellow Square Above the Planet to Learn About it! Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Uranus Neptune Saturn When you feel like you are done learning about all of the planets, click the next arrow to start the final quiz! ONCE YOU START THE QUIZ YOU MAY NOT GO BACK TO THE PLANETS!

  18. Mercury • Closest planet to the sun • Covered with craters • Mercury is often called a morning and evening star because it can at times be seen from Earth just before the sun rises and the sunsets. Click here to go back to the planets

  19. Venus • Venus and Earth are almost the exact same size. • Venus’s atmosphere is a lot thicker then Earths atmosphere. This is a major reason why we couldn’t live on it. • Venus is sometimes called the Earth’s sister. • Venus is too hot to live on

  20. Earth • The reason we live on Earth is because it has the perfect temperature, weather, and atmosphere for humans • The Earth has one moon called Luna • There are currently 7 billion people living • Earth is 70% covered by oceans and 30% by land

  21. Mars • Out of all of the planets Mars’s temperature is the most similar to Earth’s. • Mars is red • Mars has 2 moons, their names are Deimos and Phobos • Scientist use technology to take pictures of mars with the use of satellites

  22. Jupiter • Jupiter has much more gravity the Earth does. This would cause you to weigh more then half as much on Jupiter then on Earth. • The biggest planet in our solar system • Jupiter is a very colorful planet • Jupiter has 3 rings wrapped around it but we cannot see them from earth. • Jupiter has 50 moons

  23. Saturn • Saturn is very similar to Jupiter • Saturn is the least dense planet in the solar system • Saturn is the lightest planet that we know of, it spins very fast • Saturn has 7 rings • Saturn has 53 moons

  24. Uranus • Uranus spins on it’s side. • Very thick atmosphere • Scientists believe that Uranus’s surface may be huge ocean • Uranus has small rings around it • Uranus has 27 moons

  25. Neptune • Neptune is blue with large white clouds around it • The white clouds move very fast around the atmosphere and lead to the nickname “scooter” because of the “scooting” clouds • Neptune is very windy • Neptune has 6 rings • 13 moons

  26. QUIZ TIME! LETS SEE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE LEARNED!  DON’T STRESS JUST DO YOUR BEST! Click the next arrow to begin the quiz! Once you start you may not go back to the lesson!
