This study aims to examine language and visuo-spatial processing streams through sign language tasks. Two groups of deaf (native BSL, native SSL) and hearing individuals will participate. Stimuli include hand shape and location tasks presented in randomized order. Functional MRI analysis will be conducted to investigate brain activity.

Background & Aims language processing visuo-spatial processing SL processing streams?
Stimuli & Design • 2 tasks: hand shape & location • 2 runs, separate list and task for each • stimuli not repeated across lists • within list each sign presented twice • order randomized across subjects
Proposal Slide • 4 Groups (15 subjects each) • deaf native BSL • deaf non-signers • deaf native SSL • hearing non-signers • two 19 min runs • mixed design • jittered ISI (3 - 6s, mean = 4.5s) • Whole brain coverage (3x3x3 mm) • TR = 3s, TE = 50ms • analysis (SPM8) • standard fMRI analyses (1st- & 2nd-level)
