  2. What is soil ? Soil is the loose surface material of the Earth in which plants grow.

  3. Soil Soil is formed by the action of weather on rocks

  5. Soil provides support and nutrients for plant growth

  6. There are five components of soil: • Rock • Sand • Silt • Clay • Humus • Can you match each type of soil to its picture?

  7. Rock Rock is solid and made of minerals

  8. Sand Sand is tiny grains of worn down rock. It doesn’t hold water or have many nutrients.

  9. Silt Silt is very small, broken pieces of rock. It is larger than clay, but smaller than sand. It is powdery when dry. Sand ------------ Silt -------------- Clay (Larger particles)(Smaller particles)

  10. CLAY Clay holds water well. It is sticky and can be shaped when it is wet. But, it is very hard when dry. Clay has many nutrients. Clay is used for adobe or brick houses.

  11. Humus Humus is the dead remains of plants and animals. Humus is made of leaves, twigs, small animals, or other decayed substances. Humus adds many nutrients to the soil. Humus is in the topsoil.

  12. A healthy soil contains a rich balance of minerals, bacteria, soil animals, air and water.

  13. Why is soil air important? Oxygen is needed by roots of plants and by the soil animals.

  14. Why is soil moisture important? Plants need constant supply of water which they get through their roots.

  15. What is texture of a soil? • The amount of sand, silt and clay present in the soil is called texture of a soil.
