Thicknesser/Planer • Maximum Width 300mm • Hard and softwoods – not manmade boards – Used by teacher/technician
Wood Lathe • Can do long sections, and also bases • Turning blanks available • More complex lengths need to be prepared from planks and will need to be plained to shape first • Gives high quality finish • Can be done by you. • Difficult getting on machineif everyone does this!
Bandsaw/Fretsaw • Quick and easy • Care needs to be taken • Does not cut straight lines very accurately • Band saw can also be angled if necessary
Sanders • Belt, Disc (Used to sand external curves or straight edges) • Bobbin (useful for sanding curves - internal) • All three leave a course finish and will need extra finishing.
Router • Can cut slots and grooves • Can route curved/decorativeedges • Highly dangerous(1on1 supervision only!) • Also used to cut biscuit joints
Forstner Bits & Tank Cutters • Used to cut holes • Forstner bits (shown below) will remove all the material • Tank cutters will cut holes, but will leave the centre part intact • Sizes from 8mm to 40mm (forstner) • 10mm to 80mm (tank cutter)
