What are “Digital Libraries”?Kaj so “digitalne knjižnice”? • Little consensus in the literature on the definition of Digital Libraries (DL). • V literaturi ni soglasja glede definicije digitalne knjižnice (DK).
What are “Digital Libraries”? • One Definition: Organizations providing resources to select, structure, offer access, interpretation, distribution, and preservation of collections of digital works and making them economically available. (Based on the Digital Libraries Federation working definition) • Ena od definicij: DK so organizacije, ki zagotavljajo orodja za izbor, strukturiranje, dostop, interpretacijo, distribucijo in ohranjanje zbirk digitalnih gradiv ter zagotavljajo pogoje za njihovo ekonomično dostopnost.
What has been said about Education for Digital Librarianship?Kaj že vemo o izobraževanju za digitalno knjižničarstvo? • LIS Education has not been a leader, but a follower, in digital libraries. • Izobraževanje na področju bibliotekarske in informacijske znanosti do sedaj na področju digitalnih knjižnic ni imelo vodilne vloge, ampak je le sledilo drugim.
What has been said about Education for Digital Librarianship? • Both the DL research and practice communities are inthe same planetary system, but one is on Mars and the other on Venus. The research community is grounded mostly in computer science, the practice community in LIS. (A paraphrasing of statements from Saracevic & Dalbello, 2001) • Na področju DK tako raziskovalci kot praktiki sicer pripadajo istemu osončju, vendar so prvi na Marsu, drugi pa na Veneri. Dejavnost prvih temelji večinoma na računalništvu, drugih pa na bibliotekarski in informacijski znanosti.

One Response to the Model Curriculum • Would the recommended digital libraries curriculum increase LIS fragmentation? Ali bi predlagani učni načrt o digitalni knjižnici povečal razdrobljenost v bibliotekarski in informacijski znanosti? • Would an approach that integrated DL make a separate DL program unnecessary? Ali bi s poskusom integriranja problematike DK v obstoječe programe postal poseben program o DK nepotreben? • Would a separate program for DL merely split LIS graduates into traditional and IT-intensive roles? Ali bi poseben program o DK postopoma razdelil diplomante bibliotekarstva na tiste, ki bodo opravljali t.i. tradicionalna knjižnična opravila in tiste, ki bodo bolj tehnično usmerjeni? Na kateri stopnji (diplomski, magistrski ali doktorski) naj bi se izvajali programi s področja DK? • What balance should there be between “Hands on” vs. Conceptual topics in DL programs? Kakšno naj bi bilo v programih o DK razmerje med praktičnimi in konceptualnimi vsebinami? (Based on Coleman, 2002)

Review of Digital Librarianship EducationPregled izobraževanja za digitalno knjižničarstvo • Two are Master’s Degree program V dveh primerih gre za magistrska študijska programa / • One is a post-bachelor’s certificate and the other a post-master’s certificate Eden je certificirani program, ki se izvaja po diplomskem študiju, drugi pa po magistrskem študiju • All have a mix of technical courses and non-technical courses. Is there a message in the decision to drop a concentration on Digital Libraries? • Leta 2004 so na John Hopkins University ukinili študijsko usmeritev s področja digitalne knjižnice in se preusmerili na problematiko digitalnih tehnologij. Ali se v tej odločitvi skriva kakšno sporočilo?
Questions about Future ofEducationfor Digital Librarianship • Are DL programs necessary or has the practice and the field gone beyond the need for specific programs in digital librarianship? Ali so študijski programi o DK nujni, ali pa mogoče praksa in stroka ne potrebujeta več posebnih programov o digitalnem knjižničarstvu? • If separate DL programs or tracks are not needed, what changes are needed in our traditional programs ? Če posebni programi o DK niso potrebni, kaj je potem potrebno spremeniti v naših tradicionalnih programih?

Smo do izobraževalnih pobud na področju knjižničarstva preveč kritični, ko je govora o njihovem zadovoljevanju izobraževalnih potreb digitalnih knjižničarjev? • Should there be special programs for digital librarians or should all librarians be educated to work in a digital libraryenvironment? So potrebni posebni programi za digitalne knjižničarje ali naj se vsi knjižničarji izobražujejo za delo kar v okolju same digitalne knjižnice? • Are there other educational providers that are as appropriate; more approprate providers of DL education?
