Description • Throughout the course you are responsible for finding two articles from newspapers or magazines about technology. • They must be current – from this semester. • Once found, you need to do the following: • Write a summary of the article • Develop an opinion on the topic of the article • Create a presentation for the class about the article • Create a proper works cited (bibliography) for the article

Due Date • ANYTIME this semester!! • Before Friday, Jan. 20th • **You can present both articles at one time or one article at a time!!!

The Software • Face Recognition is emerging as an entertainment gimmick in Apps. • SceneTap • Free application for Smartphones • Displays statistics on the local bar scene • Face recognition cameras at bars • Social Camera • Can take a picture with your phone • It will instantly recognize and tag photos and post on the Web
The Software (continued) • FaceR • Which celebrity a person resembles • TVs with Facial Recognition Technology • Will recognize you and customize the programming • Recently watched, recorded shows, etc. • Child Access
The Technology • Needed to train computers to recognize human faces • Identify the faces within a database • Need to take into account a lot of things: • Not looking into the camera • Lighting • Facial expressions • FaceR App uses the same technology used by law-enforcement
Privacy Concerns • What information collected will be used and how? • Will people be able to opt out of the tracking? (does not seem like it) • The application makers say that they do not collect or store the faces or information. • Example – SceneTap • analyze face to determine gender and other statistics, bars receive the statistics about their clientele • Nobody sees the video footage, and the information is not recorded
My Opinion • A number of the Apps seem interesting ... Some seem silly (Vampire App) • I am sure there will be more once it catches on. • Information not recorded – NOW ... But it could be ... ?! Where will that lead ...? Paranoid? • Personally I don’t like being tagged in photos on facebook- privacy settings ... ?! • Posting pictures with other people ... Make sure I have their permission!
Additional Assignment Notes • Presentation is Point Form • Submitted Summary and Opinion would be in proper sentence and paragraph format!! • Both should be in your own WORDS! (as much as possible)
