Tropical Cloud Systems and Processes (TCSP) TCSP is focused on the study of the dynamics and thermodynamics of precipitating cloud systems, including tropical cyclones using aircraft and surface remote sensing instrumentation. Targeted data sets were collected using the NASA ER-2 research aircraft in synergy with remote sensing observations. (from http://tcsp.nsstc.nasa.gov/tcsp/) UW-CIMSS employed dedicated GOES-11 rapid scan images to produce high resolution satellite derived wind sets. Upper and lower layer wind sets during Hurricane Emily are shown below. TCSP research addresses the following topical areas: 1) tropical cyclone structure, genesis, intensity change, moisture fields and rainfall; 2) satellite and aircraft remote sensor data assimilation and validation studies pertaining to development of tropical cyclones; and 3) the role of upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric processes governing tropical cyclone outflow, the response of wave disturbances to deep convection and the evolution of the upper level warm core. ONR/NRL Hurricane Targeted Observations and Predictability Study Top: Example of GOES-12 Rapid-Scan winds produced at CIMSS during Hurricane Rita on September 21, 2005 at 00 GMT. The plot shows the upper-level wind coverage (100-400mb). Right: Singular vector sensitivity summary provided by NRL-MRY for 21 September 2005 at 00Z. The plot shows the regions where enhanced observations should improve the numerical model forecasts for both Hurricanes Rita and Philippe.
