Achievements • Harper Lee graduated high school in 1944 and went to Huntington College, an all-girls school in Montgomery. • She became a member of the literary honor society and the glee club in college. • She became editor of the Rammer Jammer after transferring to a different school. • For a while, Lee stopped editing and went to a law school and after a year, she quit. • After moving to New York, she worked for the Eastern Airlines and the British Overseas Air Corp. • In 1959 Harper Lee became a best-selling author by writing ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.’ • The movie based off of her book won four awards.
Major Life Events • She was born April 28, 1926 and grew up in Monroeville, Alabama. • Her best-selling novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ was published in 1960. • She went to Kansas to interview locals to help Truman Capote write an article for the New Yorker.
Education • Harper Lee began to be interested in literature when she went to school. • She went to an all girls school in college. • She focused on her studies more than any of the other girls. • When she transferred to a university in Alabama, she used her literary skills to contribute to the school’s newspaper.
Other Literary Works • Some of the other writing Harper Lee has done have not been published. • She also wrote ‘Go Set A Watchman’ and ‘Atticus.’ • Those were her first literary works. • She started working on a second novel but it was never published. • She edited a literary piece called the Rammer Jammer in college.
Influences • In her childhood, Lee was a tomboy and was tougher than most of the boys. • Her father was a lawyer, and Lee based one of the characters in her novel off him. • She acted as protector of her friend, Truman Capote. • In college, she was different and didn’t have many friends.
