  3. Positivity Counts • Be upbeat and positive in class, outside of class (at office hours, for example) • Students reflect back to you what you give to them first

  4. #1- Know What You’re Being Evaluated On • SPCI (Student Perception of Courses and Instruction) • Replaces SPOT II (Student Perception of Teaching) • SPCI is mandatory for all FSU courses

  5. #2- Respect • Show students you respect them by respecting their time as just as important as yours • Ask and answer all questions with respect • Learn names

  6. #3-Knowledge + Enthusiasm= • These are compatible, not mutually exclusive • Know your stuff and show students you know • Work in things about your own research or interests into class • Show and tell students that you’re interested in the subject matter, even if you’re not • Don’t lie– try to make even the most boring material fun and exciting • Remember, if you’re not excited or engaged, your students won’t be either

  7. =Engagement • If students aren’t engaged with your class, they aren’t learning • Students who don’t learn or don’t think they’re being challenged will not mark you highly on those parts of SPCI

Fairness • Did your mother ever tell you that life isn’t fair? • College is not life– we strive for fairness • Explain how a student earns grades in your class • Your expectations, as expressed in your syllabus, should be fair (and clear)! • Make sure you grade (or have your grader) be as fair as possible in all grade evaluations • Employ a rubric for written assignments to ensure fairness

Famous Last Words… • Know that no matter what you do, you will never please all students • Ever think about reviewing a product you bought or a restaurant you visited? • Did you end up writing a review? • If so, why did you write what you said? • Were you angry? • Happy? • Just okay about your purchase? • People who are moderately happy don’t spend a lot of time writing reviews • Usually only really good or really bad things to say • Don’t take it personally!
