  2. Location and Description The palace of Knossos is found on the island of Crete. It is nearby modern Heraklion. Its winding corridors are very labyrinth-like.

  3. History Of Excavation The palace of Knossos was discovered by a Crete merchant in 1878, but it wasn’t until march 16, 1900 that Sir Arthur Evans was able to purchase Knossos to conduct a series of excavations. Evans reconstructed Knossos so that people could see what it looked like back then.

  4. Significant Artifacts Some significant artifacts found in the palace of Knossos were a snake-woman-goddess sculpture, a bull head sculpture, a bull fresco and a dolphin fresco.

  5. Occupational History According to Greek mythology there was a labyrinth and a minotaur inside the palace of Knossos. Every year, King Agamemnon would have to sacrifice seven girls and seven boys to the minotaur. One year Theseus went and killed the minotaur, so that his people would never have to sacrifice a child to the minotaur ever again.

  6. Cultural Data The palace of Knossos’ civilization was minoan. Wealthy women wore flounced skirts with bodices that laced at the waist. Wealthy men’s Attire were loincloths with wide belts and fancy headdresses trimmed with feathers. There were grain mills, oil presses, and wine presses.
