Rhythm & Movement The visual flow through an artwork. The use of the elements of arts to create a feeling of motion.
Balance Is arranging elements so that no one part of a work overpowers, or feels heavier than any other part.
Balance Symmetrical balance or formal balance has equal eight on both sides.
Balance Asymmetrical balance or informal balance, has equal eight on both sides.
Balance Radial balance, is a circular balance moving out from a central object to maintain balance.
Proportion The measurement of the size of one part of artwork to its other parts in a composition.
Contrast Contrast is created by using elements that conflict with one another. Often, contrast is created using complementary colors or extremely light and dark values. Contrast creates interest in a piece and often draws the eye to certain areas.
Emphasis Used to make something stand out, like dark next to light. A way of using dominance and subordination in a design or painting. Major objects, shapes, or colors may dominate a picture by taking up more space or by being heavier in volume or by being darker in color than the subordinate objects, shapes and colors. There must be balance between the dominant and subordinate elements.
Pattern Patternis showing consistency with colors or lines. It is indicating movement by the repetition of elements. It can make an artwork seem active.
Variety Variety is the quality or state of having different forms or types, notable use of contrast, emphasis, difference in size and color.
Unity Unity is the wholeness that is achieved through the effective use of the elements and principles of art. The arrangement of elements and principles to create a feeling of completeness
