Good readers summarize. As they read, they pause to sum up the important ideas or events. This helps them remember the information. As you read a story, note the main events. After you read, ask yourself what the main events were and in what order they occurred.
Author’s Purpose An author may have more than one purpose within a story. You will often be asked question about why an author includes what he or she does in a story. The author’s purpose is the reason or reasons the author has for writing. An author may write to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or to express ideas and feelings.
Sequence • Sequence means the order in which things happen. • Dates, times, and clue words such asfirst, then, next, andlast can help you understand the order of events. • Sometimes two or more events happen at the same time. Words such as meanwhile and during can show this. First Event Second Event Third Event Fourth Event
If you think about the order of the story, you realize that Opal moved to Naomi before she found Winn-Dixie and before the other events from the story took place. Here is a sequence question you had on your test a few weeks ago. Notice the word before. Before is a clue word for a sequence question. What happened before Opal found Winn-Dixie? • She took her dog to the library. • Miss Franny told her a bear story. • She moved to Naomi, Florida. • She made a new friend.
This question was a little tough because it wasn’t written down exactly in the story. You had to think about what happened at the same time Amanda walked in. Here is a sequence question you had on your test a few weeks ago. Notice the clue phrase “at the same time.” What happened at the same time Amanda walked into the library? • Winn-Dixie barked at Amanda. • Amanda thought she saw a bear. • Miss Franny and Opal became friends. • Miss Franny began telling a story.
Put the events from Lewis and Clark and Me in order. Meriwether Lewis was looking for a dog to go with him on his expedition. One of the indians called Seamen “Bear-dog.” Seamen brought the squirrels back to Lewis. first last next first next last
